Its easy to see why Watford based band the Gallows are one of the most talked
about hardcore/punk bands around at the moment. Since I received the bands
re-issued album 'Orchestra Of Wolves' a few days ago it has not left my
cd player, the whole album is full of rage and intense energy that most
bands in this genre just lack.
The album opens up with 'Kill The Rhythm', which sets the tone for the
album full of energy with raw screamy vocals, killer guitar riffs and
drumming you just can’t fault. 'Come Friendly Bombs' is a song that
is full of melody and a song that you will find yourself listening to
time and time again and enjoying more after each and every listen. 'Abandon
Ship' is a fast song that has a really catchy vibe about it but also maintains
to be raw and brutal with spot on drumming, guitar riffs coming in thick
and fast when you don’t expect them and Frank Carters raw vocals
that finish the song off with lyrics of "I never loved you anyway,
No I never loved you anyway".
The bands lyrics are just as brutal as the bands sound, and to be fair
Frank Carter would be a poor man if he had to pay a pound for every time
he swore on this album. Frank Carter's raw screams open up 'In The Belly
Of A Shark' before he screams "In the belly of a shark so fucking
cold so fucking dark, in the belly of a shark and how the fuck did I get
this far" once again the drumming is spot on and the guitar riffs
are heavy with a metal style guitar solo and is executed nicely towards
the end of this song. Some spot on guitar riffs opens up 'Six Years' the
song also features some good breakdowns.
'Rolling With The Punches' is fast and furious from the start with Frank
Carter hardly taking time to come up for air in between vocals. 'Last
Fight For The Living Dead' is a well needed one minute long mellow instrumental
track that gives you a short break before the album continues on its hardcore
journey with the shockingly titled 'Just Because You Sleep Next To Me
Doesn't Mean You Are Safe' which happens to be one of the most brutal
sounding songs on the album.
The album title track 'Orchestra Of Wolves' finishes the album and features
lyrics that some people will find hilarious and some people will find
offensive, either way it happens to be one of the best tracks on the album
and closes the album in a perfect way.
Also included on the album is a nine-track bonus cd, which features six
bbc punk session versions of tracks that are already included on the album
such as 'Abandon Ship' which doesn’t sound as vocally strong as
the original. 'Nervous Rolling With Punches', 'Will Someone Shoot That
Fucking Snake', 'Six Years', 'Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn't
Mean You Are Safe' and one of my favourite tracks 'In The Belly Of A Shark'.
Also included on the bonus cd is a couple of new songs the first being
'Black Heart Queen' which is quite a mellow sounding track for the Gallows
but is lyrically and vocally hard hitting as you would expect. The second
new track 'Black Heart Queen' starts off with some constant spot on drumming
but is also quite a toned down track compared the rest of the album. The
bonus cd finishes with a cover of the Black Flag song 'Nervous Breakdown'
which is such a good song to hear the Gallows covering.
The Gallows truly deserve all the success they are currently getting,
their debut album 'Orchestra Of Wolves' is musically and lyrically one
of the hardest hitting albums I have come across in a long time and I
can guarantee you wont want it leaving your cd player once you have listened
to it. I really hope this marks the rebirth of punk in the UK and washes
all the emo stuff that’s forced upon us away.
5/5
