Chris Cornell has had a lot of success in the music industry mainly due
to being the lead singer of Soundgarden back in the 90's and then going
on to form Audioslave with three quarters of Rage Against The Machine. Both
bands had a lot of success with massive arena tours around the world and
a lot of successful albums. In 2006 Audioslave broke up which has lead to
Rage Against The Machine reforming and Chris Cornell to go solo and work
on his new solo album 'Carry On' which is now ready to be released.
The album starts off quite rocking with 'No Such Thing' with a massive
introduction of guitar riffs and Cornell's mellow spoken vocals soon come
in and soon change to a powerful sing a long chorus before mellowing down
once again and these seems to continue throughout most of the song making
up one of the best songs on the album. 'Poison Eye' starts off with another
good introduction that will leave you tapping your feet to the funky guitar
work on offer, and Cornell's vocals fit in perfectly with the tracks sound.
'Arms Around Your Love' is Cornell's current single and is an okay song
but I feel that Cornell's vocals totally outshine the mellow toned down
music that he is playing.
'Safe And Sound' sees Cornell tackle a ballad and is a lot different from
anything else on this album and gives Cornell's vocals time to shine especially
in the sing-a-long gospel style chorus.
Mid way through the album things start to go down hill and we are left
with some pretty average sounding songs such as 'She'll Never Be your
Man' the song is just boring from start to finish and features no get
up and go and to be fair the lyrics are slightly cheesy. 'Ghost' is quite
a mellow track that’s not going to sit to well with Cornell's hardcore
fans. 'Killing Birds' is a song that starts off really mellow with some
boring guitar playing but luckily picks up towards the end with some good
vocal work.
I don’t mind bands and artists doing the odd cover song on their
album's but I do mind when they take a classic song and put their own
sound onto it which totally murders the song and that is what Chris Cornell
has done with his cover of the Michael Jackson classic 'Billie Jean'.
Chris Cornell has made the song sound too boring and mellow and not even
his strong vocals can save him from ruining a classic song.
Things do start to look up for the album again towards the end with the
psychedelic sounding 'Scars On The Sky' and the sing a long feel of 'Your
Soul Today', which I could listen to on repeat for hours without getting
bored of it. Also included on the album is Chris Cornell's bond theme
song 'You Know My Name' which is taken from the latest Bond film 'Casino
Royale' and is a great song.
Overall 'Carry On' has a huge mixture of sounds and I’m sure that
more than half of the Sixteen tracks on the album will appeal to Chris
Cornell's hardcore fans but their is also quite a lot of fillers on this
album which could of been done without if Chris Cornell shaved the album
down to ten or eleven tracks as it’s quite rare nowadays to find
an album with sixteen tracks and not pick fault in it. This albums not
going to appeal to everyone but I’m sure Chris Cornell is going
to gain himself a new set of fans with this release.
