I reviewed these guys a while back when they released their 2012 album All Out War which I gave quite a positive review, whilst I don’t know how I missed their 2014 release (drank a lot back then) but either way here we are again in 2016 and I’m eager to give them another go. As many are aware by this point the lead vocalist Richie Cavalera is none other than the Stepson of Sepultura/Soulfly legend Max Cavalera and has features on his albums and toured the world with him. That fact alone carved a path for them in this industry but with it comes huge expectations, that is normally the downfall of bands consisting of family members of well respected musicians they already have criticism and expectations before they’ve even recorded a song. This is very much Richie’s band due to the fact he has been the only original member now since 2007, with another almost complete revamp occurring in 2013.
I’m no longer in possession of the previous album so cannot do the comparison but from what I’m seeing on this release I’m not very enthralled by what I’m hearing. There are a certain few tracks which briefly pick up my interest but after that I can’t see much behind the very similar tones and vocals. I’ve tried to listen thoroughly for a number of weeks now and I still cannot reach that point where music stops being unfamiliar to sparking reaction and recognition. It’s not terrible I’m not saying that what I am saying is that it seems to be a “safe” release by which I mean you tick the heavy metal criteria boxes and push no further.
If you want some gritty metal step right up and get yourself a copy! But if you’re looking for something new and groundbreaking then perhaps this isn’t going to be your album of the year. It hasn’t put me off the band I will keep a close eye for future releases but this one hasn’t left a great impression on me.
