I Have been very much a Dream Theater fan for many years now, their music is what I like to call the perfect stoner music, I know that has its own category but there has always been something about this band that I've found soothing amongst the chaos of arrangements.
I will start by saying, this has to be my least favourite album, it's by no means bad! It's just so different from what I want from them - hell I'll say it - from what I should be getting from them. You expect erratic tempos, insane musical compositions, John pettruci showing us how much of a guitar playing machine he is. Well none of that is really present here; it's a light rock album, albeit a fantastic light rock album but a light rock album none the less.
I won't go much more into because if I'm being honest I could appreciate the craft and the effort they put behind this record, and it is good, but when somebody says Dream Theater I am never going to say "yeah The Astonishing is the epitome of who those guys are". Have a gander for yourselves and you may disagree but this one is not for me.
