Recently the press release's for most new bands around at the moment go
on about how the band are going to be the next big thing and how the band
sounds nothing like anything else that’s going on in the music scene
at the moment and when you listen to the cd it sounds exactly like the last
scremo band you reviewed or the last indie band you heard and offers nothing
new and doesn’t stay true to what the press release says. Well on
this rare occasion with Alberta Cross this is true, they sound totally different
from anything around at the moment.
Alberta Cross will be new to most people but they are just two song writers
Petter Ericson Stakee and Terry Wolfers and the band are made up of Petter's
brother John Alexander Ericson on the organ and Seb Sternberg on drums.
'The Thief And The Heartbreaker' is the bands self-produced debut ep with
a collection of 7 heart-broke tales that all sound as interesting as each
other.
The ep starts off with the title track 'The Thief And The Heartbreaker'
which sets the sound for the whole ep with its mid-paced summery melody,
everything seems to fit together so well with its mellow bluesy feel and
vocals that just shines especially on the chorus. 'Lucy Rider' is another
great soft rocking track where Petter Ericson Stakee's vocals really do
shine. 'Hard Breaks' picks up the pace with its mixture of running piano,
catchy guitars, sing a long vocals and a really catchy vibe all together.
'Low Man' is the shortest track on the ep running at just under three
minutes in length and has a real low paced blues feel about it and seems
to end too soon.
Every song on the ep sounds different but as good as the last song but
its the finishing track 'The Devil's All You Ever Had' that really does
sound different with its lightly played riffs and gospel singers backing
up Petter Ericson Stakee's stunning vocals.
Overall Alberta Cross are not going to become the next big band just
like that but with their debut release 'The Thief And The Heartbreaker'
the band are certainly on the right steps to success and im sure we will
be hearing a lot more from Alberta Cross in the future.
4.5/5
