After blasting onto the music scene back in 2010
the Butcher Babies finally released their debut
studio album ‘Goliath’ back in July
2013 and the album was one hell of an explosive
offering which we totally loved at Alternative
Vision and now the band are gearing up to release
a covers EP titled ‘Uncovered’ and
it features the band cover 5 classic songs from
5 different artists within the rock music scene
and you have to hand it to the Butcher babies
for the fact that they have managed to create
a truly diverse sounding EP within the tracks
they have chose to cover.
The great thing about ‘Uncovered’
is that all 5 members of the Butcher Babies chose
a track and the likes of ZZ Top’s ‘Beer
Drinkers And Hell Raisers’, ‘The Osmond’s
‘Crazy Horses’, Napoleon XIV ‘The’re
Coming To Take Me Away’ ‘Suicidal
Tendencies ‘Don’t Give A Fuck’
and S.O.D’s ‘Pussy Whipped’
and just by knowing who all those artists are
you start to realise how well thought out ‘Uncovered’
has been.
Things kick off with a cover of the classic ZZ
Top song ‘Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers’
and it is bloody epic everything it turned up
a couple of extra notches sound wise and vocally
the chants of “Beer drinks and hell raisers”
is massive and so are the duel lead vocals from
Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey as they battle
it out with each other.
‘There’re Coming To take Me Away’
is a cover of a song which was originally released
in 1966 and somehow reached number 4 in the UK
singles chart and I have to say I have never heard
of the song before so checked it out on You Tube
before listening to the butcher Babies version
and I feel that everyone should go and check it
out as it oddly sounds like something that Fat
Les would do and happens to be the weirdest song
ever, however the Butcher Babies have totally
reworked the song and made it their own and totally
full of metal madness and heavy epicness.
Over the years I have heard various different
bands cover songs from the Suicidal Tendencies
back catalogue and it’s a pleasure to hear
the Butcher Babies cover their song ‘Don’t
Give A Fuck’ the is so close to the original
but more raw, more heavy and full of attitude.
The next cover is a cover of the classic Osmonds
song ‘Crazy Horses’ and the original
song on its own is epic and a song that pretty
much everyone who has heard it loves and loves
to sing-a-long to and I would imagine that fans
of the original would show major disproval of
this cover if they heard the song but let’s
face how many proper hardcore fans of the original
are going to be searching for music by the Butcher
Babies, and if they do find it they will be treated
to a pleasantly heavy cover with some epic guitar
work which is full of distortion and special effects.
The last track on the EP is the cover of S.O.D’s
‘Pussy Whipped’ and it is a heavy
blast of energy which is executed at such speed,
seriously the speed of this song is insane and
stays so true to the original as the Butcher Babies
smash their way through the song with such passion.
Overall ‘Uncovered’ has been a great
release from the Butcher Babies not only does
it show what bands and songs they like to listen
to in their spare time and what a diverse music
taste they have it also shows their creativity
when it comes to taking a classic song and making
it their own and in true Butcher Babies style
the heaviness, speed and raw sounds that their
fans have come to expect from the band are fully
in place.
