Pledge music really seems like the future for
musicians these days as so many ditch the hassle
of working alongside a record label and instead
they reach out to their fans by offering loads
of weird, whacky and special things for a price
to help fund their music and bands have been offering
stuff like receiving the album early, their name
on the artwork, a dinner with the musician, a
gig played in their house and one band even offered
to have the pledges name tattooed on their body
and the great thing is so many musicians are smashing
their target within weeks or even days of starting
their pledge campaign and Mable should know all
about that as his band mate Ginger Wildheart holds
the record for the quickest and most successful
pledge campaign ever so it is no wonder why Mable
has chosen to go down this route.
‘Mable’ is the first solo album from
CJ Wildheart in 7 years and it is a record which
was created in his home studio throughout the
summer and winter of 2013 and the final outcome
is exactly what you would expect from someone
who has dedicated so much of their life writing,
recording and touring with The Wildhearts as the
album is as big, quirky and catchy as anything
in the Wildhearts back catalogue.
The album opens with ‘Better Late Than Never’
and as soon as it kicks you are greeted with a
sound so similar to that of previous CJ Wildheart
work, the song is short with a big energetic burst
and really smooth sounding vocals from CJ Wildheart.
‘Down The Drain’ picks up the pace
somewhat and flows for the duration with a big
bouncy vibe and once the chorus kicks in things
become crazily catchy.
‘Next To You’ has serious lastability
and is the song the song on the album that I kept
finding myself coming back to as once the chorus
hits you really know about it as it is seriously
the catchiest moment of the whole album and so
pleasing on the ears.
You can tell that CJ Wildheart has spent a lot
of time creating ‘Mable’ as each of
the 11 tracks on the album are so listenable yet
so different from each other as one minute you
will be listening to the massively catchy ‘Vitriol’
and then the next you will find yourself listening
to the whacky ‘Always Believe Her’
and then the slow but heavy ‘Come With Me’.
The Wildhearts have a massive hardcore following
and I really hope that they pick up a copy of
‘Mable’ as it is such good offering
from the talented song writer that is CJ Wildheart
who I sometimes think gets over shadowed by everyone’s
favourite ginger northerner Ginger Wildheart.
