Last year Anti-Flag headed out on a 20th Anniversary
tour and now the band are following that up with
the release of their greatest hits ‘A Document
Of Dissent 1993-2013’ which is due for release
on the 22nd July on Fat Wreck Chords which happens
to be the bands first release on Fat Wreck Chords
since their 2003 album ‘The Terror State’
as over the years Anti-flag have bounced through
the likes of New Red Archives, RCA, SideOneDummy
and various other labels.
If you are a regular reader of Alternative Vision
then you will know that I am not the biggest fan
of greatest hits releases as they are 90% of the
time a record label idea on how to make money
easily and offer fans all their favourite songs
grouped into one release with an extra track or
demos thrown in to make it worthwhile however
with the release of ‘A Document Of Dissant
1993-2013’ I feel that it might be the best
value greatest hits package ever released and
also a perfect buy for anyone who has got into
the music of Anti-Flag over say the past 5 years
and never knew where to start with buying their
music.
‘A Document Of Dissent 1993 -2013’
really is the perfect addition to any fans Anti-Flag
collection as it features 26tracks which have
been released on 9albums and spanning across the
whole 20 year career of Anti-Flag and what makes
things even more exciting is the fact that Anti-Flag
have taken time to document the history and meaning
between each and every song alongside a biographical
timeline of the band’s history alongside
world events and how some of these events inspired
some of the Anti-Flag songs.
The track list is featured in date order so whilst
listening to the album you can see how Anti-Flag
have changed over the years which they clearly
have but there are a few things that have never
changed and that is the fast paced playing, big
punk attitude and political themes of their songs.
It’s great to have the likes of ‘Die
For Your Government’, ‘Fuck Police
Brutality’, ‘ Turncoat’, ‘Power
To The Peaceful, ‘That’s Youth’,
‘The Press Corpse’, ‘1 Trillion
Dollars’, ‘The Bright Lights Of America’,
‘Broken Bones’ all featured on one
album.
It is safe to say that ‘A Document Of Dissent
1993 -2013’ is a must buy for fans of Anti-Flag
and anyone that is into punk rock, I seriously
believe that Anti-Flag are extremely under rated
and should be playing in bigger venues than they
actually do and this release really backs that
up as this is a collection of political punk rock
songs at their very best.
