When it comes to the industrial music scene Combichrist
are one of the most talked about bands in the
scene, the Norwegian four piece band have been
together since 2003 and have gone on to release
5 studio albums, whilst also creating the soundtrack
to the Devils May Cry computer game, yet it is
the live scene where Combichrist really shine,
the band have spent a lot of time on the road
supporting German industrial metal gods Rammstein
over the years as well as causing mayhem at their
own headline shows where they give 110% no matter
how many or little people they are playing for
and now they are set to release their sixth studio
album ‘We Love You’ which is going
to be followed up with one hectic touring schedule.
The album opens with ‘We Were Made To Love
You’ and after a short spoken word introduction
about how humanity is slowly breaking down and
becoming a threat mayhem explodes as the band
go all out with big in your face synths and seriously
angry vocals from frontman Andy LaPlegua with
big chant-a-long backing vocals coming and going
throughout the song helping build up the epic
feel that the song has.
‘Every Day Is War’ has the synths
and beats of a club classic but also has the heavy
and aggressive feel of a metal song whilst also
sounding like something from a sci-fi movie in
places, it is bound to go down a storm on the
live circuit and would certainly bring some funky
foot work onto the dance floor at alternative
music clubs across the world, the work and effort
that has been put into the song is truly amazing
and it is moments like this which make Combichrist
stand out so far above other bands in their genre
as they seriously think out of the box and go
down the unexpected route.
‘Can’t Control’ is mainly an
instrumental track where the band get extremely
technical with their synths and create an insane
mixture of music throughout the 4minutes running
of the song with vocalist Andy LaPlegua chanting
out “Can’t control, can’t control”
repeatedly from time to time.
‘Maggots at The Party’ is one of the
best songs on the album it’s full of energy
and really does feature the right mixture of metal
and techno whilst vocally the vocals are the clearest
I have ever heard from Andy LaPleagua with hardly
any special effects in place as he chants about
maggots being at the party. ‘Love Is A Razorblade’
is also right up there with ‘Maggots At
The Party’ as one of the best songs on the
album as it is just so fast paced and insane sounding,
and let’s not forget the crazily named ‘Fuck
Unicorns’ which sounds what I’d expect
Enter Shikari to sound like on speed.
The majority of the album does feel like you have
sunk too many pints and ended up at a crazy rave
where everything is so big sounding and in your
face but there is one song titled ‘The Evil
In Me’ where Combichrist take a breather
from the mayhem and go down a dark and twisted
sounding piano driven route where Andy LePlegua
tells an story with such clear sounding vocals.
Combichrist really can’t be faulted as they
really do put everything into their music and
I really do feel that they have done exactly what
they set out to do and out done themselves with
‘We Love You’ as the album is a blast
from start to finish which I imagine is even better
experienced on the live circuit.
