Idiom are a four piece band who formed way back
in 2005 and since then they have shared the stage
with many bands such as 36 Crazyfists, Skindred,
Aiden, Young Guns, Bring Me The Horizon, From
Autumn To Ashes, Cancer Bats, Every Time I Die,
Devildriver and even played at the Download, Nass
and Bloodstock festivals but despite all this
the band have never really gained the recognition
that they have been reaching out for, but things
might just be about to change with the release
of their new 6 track EP ‘Movement’.
For the release of ‘Movement’ Idiom
have teamed up with Metal Hammer magazine to give
the EP away for free and this is something that
bands like The Defiled, Romeo Must Die and various
other bands have done in the past and it has paid
off especially for The Defiled who are now back
on the road playing sold out headline shows across
the country, so for Idiom they are hoping the
move will pay off and after listening to the EP
a couple of times I really think that it will
as well as their music is exactly what readers
of Metal Hammer are going to dig.
‘Movement’ from Idiom is quite a diverse
sounding release and shows off many sides of the
band as the album features everything from crashing
drums, beefy guitar riffs, bouncy bass lines,
shouty vocals, sing-a-long vocals and a generally
mix which see’s the band go from in your
face rock to more radio friendly rock within seconds.
The EP opens with the title track ‘Movement’
a track which comes crashing towards you with
pure brutal energy as vocalist Matt Sharland let’s
rip in a full on way, as the song progresses things
become more melodic especially during the more
radio friendly sounding chorus, but throughout
at random interviews the guitars get technical
and the general sound and feel of the song packs
an almighty punch.
‘Braindead’ is vocally amazing it
starts off in a slight rap-rock kind of way and
then suddenly things get angry as Matt Sharland
lays down some proper in your face screamo vocals
whilst Kris Gibbs lays down some tasty guitar
riffs with Grant Knight and Dan Harrison backing
this up with their solid bass and drum work.
‘In The Fall’ is a full on nu-metal
anthem and one that I can see the fans screaming
to loud and clear alongside the band. ‘Said
And Done’ is easily the less accessible
song on the EP it is just a bit slow paced and
more toned down than the rest of the songs on
the EP, but that’s not to say the song is
not worth a listen as after a while it becomes
a catchy number. ‘Cold Night Run’
is also a more slow paced song but the loud repetitive
screams of “Cold Night Run” helps
bring the song to life. The infectious ‘Red’
brings the EP to a close and is a perfect ending
with the right balance of scream vocals and sing-a-long
vocals and some spot on instrumental work.
With the release of ‘Movement’ I really
think that Idiom have hit their mark and are about
to shine through and gain a solid following as
they seriously know what to do when it comes to
creating music and the giveaway with Metal Hammer
magazine is going to help them reach out to more
people than they ever could imagine.
