Every now and again you stumble across a new band
who instantly blow you away and that happened
to me a couple of weeks ago with Coldrain when
I got their debut UK press release sent over with
a link for their video for ‘Inside Of Me’
a song which mixes the best of melodic and heavy
rock whilst also reminding me ever so slightly
of Bullet For My Valentine.
Since listening to ‘Inside Of Me’
I have checked out the history of the five piece
band who formed in Nagoya, Japan way back in 2007
and since their formation they have gone on to
release 3 full length studio albums as well as
a couple of EP’s and the band now heading
over to the UK for their debut UK shows which
see’s them play three headline shows towards
the end of January and start of February and after
that they have been invited out by Bullet For
My Valentine to support them on their European
tour and to coincide with all this Coldrain are
set to release their 2012 EP ‘Through Clarity’
in the UK and Europe on the 27th January and it
is a good move as ‘Through Clarity is a
big infectious 6track and 21minute offering which
is going to gain your full attention within the
first couple of minutes.
‘Through Clarity’ is such a big sounding
EP the songs blast out of your speakers with such
passion and pace, in fact the songs come at you
with a big punk rock pace whilst elements of metal
and melodic rock grace the airwaves as the band
unleash the beast with full on in your face riffs
and drum beats whilst vocalist Masato shows off
his winning formula as his vocals chop and change
from screams to melodic sings throughout the 6
tracks.
The EP opens with ‘No Escape’ and
straight away you will understand why Coldrain
have been picked to support Bullet For My Valentine
in Europe as there are so many similarities between
the two bands with the main similarity being the
fact that both bands have somehow managed to craft
the perfect mix of heaviness and melodicness where
both bands have created songs which could easily
gain regular radio play on the mainstream radio
but also get the pit moving and causing an energetic
bout of bodies jumping and arms flowing on the
live circuit.
‘Persona’ opens with some killer riffs
and quickly wastes no time showing off the heavy
side of the band as the heaviness has clearly
been beefed up a notch or two from the opening
track as the band energetically thrash their way
through the song creating a massive buzz with
their massive riffing and general jamming.
‘The Future’ shows a more softer side
of Coldrain as the instrumental work has been
toned down as the band go on a more radio friendly
journey where everything sounds just so smooth
and catchy. Whilst ‘Six Feet Under’
and ‘Never Look’ away are both powerful
tracks with the earlier on the two being a proper
in your face riff driven track and the later of
the two featuring machine gun style drumming and
a massive melodic chorus.
The EP closes with ‘Inside OF Me’
which happens to be the first song I ever heard
from these guys and it is the perfect song to
close the EP as it is massive sounding and a song
which I can see instantly becoming a fan favourite
and bringing the mosh pit alive at future live
shows.
Big things are certainly on the way for Coldrain
as they signed a deal with raw Power Management
back in December and now they are heading out
of Japan for their first ever UK and European
shows whilst bringing their 2012 ‘Through
Clarity’ EP with them which is certainly
all killer no filler.
