Recently Reef guitarist Kenwyn House has been
working his socks off as he has just completed
a 6 dates sold out tour across the UK with Reef
to celebrate their 20th anniversary and previous
to heading out on tour with Reef his headed back
into the studio with the band to work on some
new tracks, 2 of which were played throughout
the anniversary tour which has gave hope to Reef
fans that a new EP or album is in the work and
in his spare time he has also managed to find
time to record the debut EP for his new band Goldray
which see’s Kenwyn House team up with Leah
Rasmussen and Geoff Laurens to complete the big
guitar driven psychedelic EP.
The EP opens with ‘Outloud’ a song
which open’s in a Led Zeppelin way with
its bouncy riffs and moments later the rest of
the band come in for a big psychedelic progressive
journey with Leah Rasmussen taking centre stage
with her heart felt powerful vocals which soar
throughout the song, throughout the long running
7 minute track Kenwyn House really get’s
to show off his guitar skills especially towards
the middle of the song as he lets rip with a massive
long running guitar solo.
‘Calling Your Name’ is like a total
opposite from the opening track in the way that
the song is very slow and dark sounding where
the instrumentally work is really toned down and
vocally Leah Rasmussen vocals are smooth but very
dark sounding.
‘Indigo Sky’ opens with some constant
drum beats and quickly turns into a dreamy little
number once the whole band come in , instrumentally
things are quite average sounding and it is the
powerful vocals from Leah Rasmussen which helps
turn the song into a big dreamy listen.
The EP closes with ‘Diamond Ring’
a song which runs for over 8minutes and this proves
to be a good thing as the musical changes happening
throughout the song are fantastic and Geoff Laurens
deserves a special mention for his bass works
which makes me wonder if he got lessons from Led
Zeppelins Jon Paul Jones.
So far Goldray have had some outstanding support
as the EP was funded through the crowd funder
Pledge music, I will however admit that Goldray
are an enquired taste and it may take people longer
than normal to get into the band and understand
what they are all about but once you do you will
be glad that you gave them a listen as the musical
talent oozing through Goldray is simply fantastic
as Kenwyn House, Leash Rasmussen and Geoff Laurens
make a great team.
