Enter Shikari have been one of the most hyped upcoming UK bands in a long
time for a couple of reasons. To start with the band formed in 2003 and
have spent most of their time since then touring up and down the country
in a clapped out van gathering up a huge fan base which clearly shows as
Enter Shikari recently became one of the only bands to play the legendary
London Astoria without a record deal and only one self released single to
their name. The band have a stunning live show which see's the audience
form human pyramids and if you haven’t got a glow stick you will be
the odd one out as the crowd light the venues up with a sea of glow sticks.
Enter Shikari also have a unique sound which has the dance beats of a rave,
the hardcore vocals of a screamo band and an overall slightly poppy edge.
With a few single releases over the past few months and the band turning
down offers from major record labels and doing all the work themselves
writing and producing their album 'Enter The Skies' can it live up to
the hype now the album is finally here?
'Take To The Skies' opens up with the intro of 'Stand Your Ground: this
Is Ancient Land' which is full of rave synth sounds and soon kicks into
'Enter Shikari' which has a feel like you have just walked into an illegal
rave with Rou screaming "shit" many times with the crowd screaming
and trance beats booming out.
Track 3 'Mothership' was the first Enter Shikari song I ever heard and
six months on it is still as good as when I first heard the song, starting
with a euphoric opening and with Rou's vocals loud and brutal. The song
is full of impressive breakdowns that work really well. 'Anything Can
Happen In the Next Half Hour' is the latest Enter Shikari single release
and is currently given the band success on major radio stations/shows.
The song is another impressive release and once again has a euphoric feeling
but with a more heavy powerful sound with huge guitar riffs and constant
loud drumming mixed in.
'Take To The Skies' is full of short interludes which break up songs
but also run up to a good introduction such as with 'Labyrinth' with its
chirpy keyboard introduction and screamo vocals which last for about 10
seconds before going into more sing a long verses. 'No Sssweat' has a
bit of a different sound to most of the album and is just a fast assault
of vocals and backing sounds sounding like you’re playing space
Invaders and ends up being a below average song. 'Today Won't Go Down
In History' is even more of a change of sound with a slight emo feel about
it.
'Jonny Sniper' is another song that’s a lot different from any
of the bands single releases but is quite an exciting song at the same
time and one of my favourite songs on the album. It’s a totally
uplifting song starting with happy keyboard sounds and strong sing a long
vocals with crunching guitars kicking in for the chorus. 'Ok! Time For
Plan B' returns to the sound the band are loved for with its mixture of
trance, punk and metal sounds and before you know it the album is closing
with a mellow musical outro.
Overall 'Take To The Skies' is a great album written, produced and recorded
by four people who love what they are doing so much that they turned down
offers from major record labels so they could do everything their way.
The only downside on the album is a couple of the songs are below average
and seem like fillers just to clock up enough tracks to release the album,
but then again it is quite rare to find an album where you love each and
every track. You wont be able to escape Enter Shikari for the rest of
2007 so get your glow sticks at the ready.
4.5/5
