You can tell that Christmas is just around the
corner as some many bands and artists are releasing
greatest hits and the latest band to do so are
South African rockers Seether but Seether have
gone one step further than what most bands do
when it comes to releasing greatest hits and what
they have decided to do is release a double album
which features 27 tracks where the first CD is
made up of 15 singles and fan favourite songs
whilst the second disc is made up of 12 tracks
and features various different b-sides, demos
and rare Seether songs.
2002 – 2013 is a special release from Seether,
as mentioned above the first disc is full of all
15 singles that the band has released from their
debut album Disclaimer right up until their latest
album Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray
and the best thing is the songs are in order of
which was released first and last so when listening
through you can clearly see how Seethers sound
and style has changed over the years.
The album opens with the early grunge sounds of
‘Fine again’, ‘Driven Under’
and ‘Gasoline’ which all sound similer
from music spanning the Nirvana back catalogue
and then suddenly you are greeted with ‘Broken’
the song which saw Seether team up with Evanescence’s
Amy Lee for a truly beautiful stripped back song
which oozes in vocal power from both Amy Lee and
Shaun Morgan who compliment each other’s
vocals perfectly.
There are so many solid songs on the first disc
such as ‘Remedy’, ‘The Gift’,
‘Broken Whisper’, ‘Tonight’
but it is the likes of ‘Country Song’,
‘Fake It’, ‘Rise Above’
and ‘Here And Now’ which really make
Seether shine as each and every one of these tracks
has a big catchy vibe and all leave you reaching
for the repeat button so you can hear the greatness
that Seether have to offer here once more.
As mentioned above the second disc is full of
demo’s, three new songs, and various unreleased
b-sides and movie soundtrack songs and it kicks
off with a cover of Veruca Salt’s ‘Seether’
which also happens to be the song which the band
took their name from, the cover is fantastic and
full of heavy riffs and fast paced aggressive
vocals from Shaun Morgan and it makes me wonder
why it has taken the band until now to release
a studio recording of the song as it has been
played on the live circuit for a long time now.
The other two new songs ‘Safe To Say I’ve
Had Enough’ and ‘Weak’ both
prove that Seether despite releasing a best of
Seether still have a lot to offer as both song’s
shine for various different reasons and flow with
a smooth radio friendly edge whilst also laying
down some solid guitar riffs.
Over the years Seether have had many songs feature
of movie soundtracks and they are featured on
the Best Of, we have the extremely shouty ‘Out
Of My Way’ from the Freddy Vs Jason Soundtrack,
the riff heavy ‘Hang On from the Daredevil
soundtrack and laid back ‘No Shelter’
from the NCIS soundtrack.
The end of the second disc features three demo
songs which are the badly recorded ‘Burn
The Bridges’ which musically has potential
but overall sounds all over the place due to the
recording levels, then we have the sleepy ‘Butterfly
With Teeth’ and then the fantastic dark
and dreamy ‘Melodious’ which finishes
off this 27 track collection well.
As far as Best Of albums go Seether have packaged
an almighty collection spanning through their
whole career so far and the album is incredibly
good value for money even if you are a hardcore
Seether fan that owns every album, soundtrack
and release they have ever worked on as I am sure
there are a few songs hidden here that you have
yet been able to hunt down on psychical release.
