When Bowling For Soup announced in April that
they were to embark on their last ever UK tour
in October I totally forgot that they were working
on a brand new fan funded album to coincide with
the tour until I received the album ‘Lunch.
Drunk. Love’ a couple of days ago which
happened to be quite a pleasant surprise.
‘Lunch. Drunk. Love’ is the 12th studio
album from Bowling For Soup which happens to be
an amazing accomplishment for a band who have
been going for 19 years, the album opens with
the fun ‘Critically Disdained’ which
opens in an acoustic way with Jared Riddick strumming
his acoustic guitar and singing-a-long before
the rest of the band come in turning the song
into a big fun electronic sing-a-long with a huge
chorus.
‘When We Broke Up’ is just like a
classic Bowling For Soup song that would easily
fit in with any of their past 11 studio albums,
the song is well written with witty lyrics with
Riddick singing “Since we broke up I never
have to wash the sheets, I get the mail in my
underwear, Since we broke up I can grow out my
beard and shave it like I just don’t care,
and i’m doing fine without you since we
broke up” before the rest of the band come
in with backing chants of “lalalalala”.
‘Real’ is easily the biggest sing-a-long
song on the album it is quite a serious sounding
song about being real and not changing, the lyrics
are once again well written to the point that
I am sure a lot of people can relate to them as
Riddick sings about owning an old skool Volvo
and eating a Muller Light whilst all his friends
are drinking wine and not changing for anyone.
‘From The Rooftops’ is a fast paced
bouncy offering from the start and once again
shows how good Jarad Riddick is when it comes
to writing lyrics as he sings “She hates
my friends, my friends hate here, takes all her
time makes me late for work, she’s not another
guys name tattooed on her arse, my mum and dad
say we are moving too fast” from the beginning
and then during the massive chorus “Have
you ever been so in love you want to shout it
from the roof tops” which is quickly followed
up by shouts of “wooooaaah, wooooooaaaah”
with Riddick then repeating “Follow your
heart fuck everybody else” again and again
which could quite possible be the best bit of
advice ever from anyone.
‘Circle’ is another song which starts
off in an acoustic way with the rest of the band
coming in half way through but this time the song
stays mellow as Riddick lays his heart on the
line questioning being alone and why a friend
in his circle of friends doesnt come around anymore.
Lyrically ‘Normal Chicks’ is a fun
song as Riddick sings about a chick who is no
Pamela Lee, Jessica Biel , Christen Bell but who
is a lot of fun, oozes in sex appeal and who looks
best in sweat pants with no makeup on and with
messed up hair which I am sure anyone who is in
loved or fallen in love in the past can relate
to.
You would have thought that 12 albums of doing
poppy punk that Bowling For Soup would have run
out of ideas but that is not the case as ‘Lunch.
Drunk. Love’ is yet another solid offering
from Bowling For Soup and one that I am sure they
are going to include a few songs from in their
UK farewell tour this October.
Bowling For Soup may well be giving up on touring
the UK but with the release of ‘Lunch Drunk
Love’ and talks of an acoustic, covers and
greatest hits album in 2014 there is still a lot
to come from Bowling For Soup and am I am sure
that a lot of people like me wonder how long after
this UK farewell tour it will be until the band
are back touring the UK as let's face it, it is
their second home.
