Finnish cult-folk-metal-rockers Turisas are set
to release their fourth studio album ‘Turisas
2013’ on Monday and judging by the poor
album title you would expect that Turisas have
lost their creative knack and are about to release
an half arsed album well luckily that is not the
case as the album is as good sounding as some
of their back catalogue and if not better in places.
Since the band released their third studio album
‘Stand Up And Fight’ in 2011 a few
things have changed in the Turisas camp as drummer
Tude Lehtonen, bassist Hannes Horma have both
left the band with Jesper Anastasiadis since being
recruited to play bass and Jaakko Jakku to play
drums and with this change in band members come
a slight change in sound for Turisas including
the lack of a concept for the album as the band
have decided to go down the route of writing an
album where the songs are not connected.
The album opens with ‘For Your Own Good’
the song is a fast paced melodic number with some
forceful metal moments on offer. ‘Ten More
Miles’ sounds like a mad piece of battle
music, something that you would expect to hear
in a major blockbuster film about Vikings or a
Dungeons And Dragons computer game, the song features
some brilliant build up moments as the band then
go down the gang vocal root which sounds epic
in places.
‘Into The Free’ has one of the best
openings on the album with a solid drum piece
before the rest of the band come in kicking off
a slight orchestra metal sound, the drumming from
Jaakko Jakku is constant and extremely heavy whilst
Mathias Nygard shows off his diverse range of
vocals throughout whilst the rest of the band
lay down a sound which leaves you thinking they
are charging off on their horses away from a victorious
battle.
‘Run Bhang-Eater, Run!’ is one hell
of a random offering and a big catchy folk number
which features everything from powerful guitar
riffs, saxophone sounds and also the sounds of
people having sex in a mad party environment.
‘No Good Story Ever Starts With Drinking
Tea’ is easily the most accessible track
on the album as Turisas go down a mad folk-punk
route where everything is just big fast and fun
sounding, think of Goldblade mixed with Alestorm
and I am sure you will get an understanding of
what to expect before the first note has been
laid down.
The album comes to a close with ‘We Ride
Together’ and the song reminds me of a more
progressive sounding Dragonforce, it is power-metal
with mad chant-a-long lyrics and more soundscapes
than your brain can possible take as Turisas literarily
throw everything into the mix here.
If you can get past the extremely poor album name
‘Turisas 2013’ then give the album
a listen as there are some fun moments to be had,
I am not sure how the hardcore Turisas fans are
going to react to ‘Turisas 2013’ as
it is a slight step away from what the band have
created and released before but you have to give
them kudos for changing their game slightly 16
years into their musical career.
