I first discovered French progressive metal brutes
Klone back in April of 2011 when they supported
King’s X on their UK tour as it passed through
Wolverhampton, I was very impressed with them
across the board with both performance and musical
composition. The quality of the music passing
over here from France in recent times is absolutely
astonishing with the likes of Gojira fronting
the takeover; Klone can unmistakable be compared
to progressive metal icons Tool not however because
they’ve copied their style as this is not
the case, but instead because they are just as
beautifully crafted from metaphorical prog gold.
“The Dreamer’s Hideaway” completely
takes off, trance inducing goodness with a mix
of melodic progressive rock which incorporates
jazz, blues and psychedelic tones to drag listeners
through a mystical journey which in a strange
way for a rock act manages to soothe the soul.
Take “Corridors” for an example of
why I say they have an obvious comparison to Tool
as the vocals sound remarkably similar to that
of Maynard James Keenan’s distinctive sound,
not quite as insane as the musical structures
found within one of their albums though this stuff
is still quite complex but not on a ridiculous
level. “Rocket Smoke” is a phenomenal
song for a) singing along and b) allowing your
neck to have a little work out with the amount
of groove being rammed down your throat, in a
good way may I add; the albums longest song “Walking
On Clouds” clocks in at 7 minutes 10 seconds
and is subject to alternating tempos and structures
making for an obscure sound which will capture
attention and retain it.
I could go on all day but I don’t want to
bore you by taking away all the surprise, what
I would instead prefer you to do is close this
window find some way of listening to the album
either online or purchase it, pour yourself a
stiff drink or light yourself a smoke (whichever
floats your boat), kick back and enjoy everything
this French masterpiece has to offer you.
