I first came across The Front Bottoms when they
released their self titled album back in 2011
and I instantly fell in love with their music
as the album from start to finish was a blast,
instrumentally things were quite simple but pleasing
yet lyrically things were big and fun as Brian
Sella had so many true to life stories to tell
which quite often left me with a big smile on
my face.
Nearly 2 years later The Front Bottoms are back
with their fourth studio ‘Talon Of The Hawk’
and my god are we in for a treat as they have
wrote another cracking 12 track album which is
just as fun if not better than their 2011 self
titled offering.
With ‘Talon Of The Hawk’ The Front
Bottoms have changed their sound slightly and
gone for a fuller sounding sound as they include
different instruments and sounds into the album
compared to their previous albums and this is
actually a big bonus as Brian Sella is still on
top form telling various different tales yet this
time around there is slightly more going on helps
you get engrossed into the music even more, seriously
40 minutes length of the album will be over before
you know it leaving you to hit the repeat button
pretty quick.
‘Talon Hawk’ opens with ‘Au
revoir (Adios)’ which happens to be the
perfect opening track, musically the song starts
off quite toned down but as the song reaches the
one minute mark the excitement truly kicks in
as The front Bottoms really go for it, lyrically
the song is as fun and silly as any other song
from the band but it’s pretty much certain
that people will be screaming out “Rock
N Roll” “Au Revoir” and “Adios”
at future live shows.
‘Skeleton’ is bouncy number right
from the off, it will have you showing your dance
moves off to your neighbours as you blast the
song out in your garden during the peak of the
summer as let’s face it The Front Bottoms
write big summer sounding songs which is best
enjoyed with some sun rays and a cold cider, anyway
back to the song lyrically it is wacky as Brian
Sella sings about getting stoned and falling asleep
with lyrics of “And I got so stoned, I fell
asleep in the front seat, I never sleep in the
front seat, I’m too tall, but I got so stoned”.
There is no chance of getting bored with ‘Talon
Hawk’ as The Front Bottoms have a knack
of never writing two songs that sound the same,
you could listen to their whole back catalogue
and you would never be able to put your finger
on two songs that were similar, instrumentally
The Front Bottoms are sounding solid these days
whilst lyrically they have wrote some of the best
songs of their career so far in ‘Talon Of
The Hawk’, just listen to the likes of ‘Swear
To God The Devil Made Me Do It’, ‘Twin
Size Matters’, ‘Tattooed Tears’
and ‘Everything I Own’ for perfect
examples of this.
It is safe to say that ‘Talon Hawk’
will be spinning in my CD player for the majority
of the summer as The Front Bottoms are quickly
becoming one of my favourite bands, if you are
yet to hear The Front Bottoms or not sure if to
get ‘Talon Hawk’ then seriously head
over to Itunes or down to your nearest record
store to purchase it now as the soundtrack to
summer 2013 is here.
