The Kaiser Chiefs clocked up a huge fan base with their debut album 'Employment'
which was full of catchy sing a long choruses that you just couldn’t
escape from on the radio, on the TV and even drunks in the street chanting
"I predict a riot" at each other after football matches.
Two years later and the Kaiser Chiefs are back with their second album
'Yours Truly, Angry Mob' and the band have changed ever so slightly by
going for a more mature heavy sound but still maintaining the catchy edge
that everyone loved the bands debut album for.
The album opens up with 'Ruby' which was the first single release from
the album and also gained the Kaiser Chiefs their first ever number one
in the singles chart. The song is really catchy but quite repetitive but
that’s what the fans love about the band as it makes for a huge
sing a long song.
'The Angry Mob' seems like a pretty average song but it’s towards
the end the song gets fun leaving the chant long bits until then. 'Heat
Dies Down' is a pretty good song with a really fast catchy vibe about
it. 'Highroyds' is a song about Leeds, it’s a pretty fast song and
has the potential to be a future single. I really like 'I Can Do It Without
You', it’s a pretty slow song for the Kaiser Chiefs' but has a great
chorus of "I can do it, I can do it, I can do it without you".
Its not until towards the end of the album that you get to some of my
favourite tracks with the first one being 'My Kind Of Guy' which has a
really mellow, dark but depressing sound about it and vocals that are
more of a spoken pace rather than sing a long. Then we have my personal
favourite track 'Everything Is Average Nowadays' it’s such a happy
catchy song with a non Kaiser Chiefs sound about it, the song is also
full of really cheesy lyrics like "All I need is a ball and a wall,
Or a sledge and a hill, In heavy weather"
Track ten, 'Boxing Champ' is a totally change of sound for the Kaiser
Chiefs as it’s a short acoustic song sung by drummer Nick Hodgson.
'Learnt My Lesson Well' starts off with a Green Day style riff and Ricky
Wilson's indie style vocals soon follow up singing about how life could
be worse. The album finishes with 'Retirement' a song with a chant a long
chorus of "I want to retire, no longer required" which finishes
the album on a good song.
I think the Kaiser Chiefs have done well with 'Yours Truly, Angry Mob'
as when your as big as the Kaiser Chiefs are, making that second album
is always a struggle as it normally makes or breaks the band depending
on the direction taken. With this album the band have done the sensible
thing and changed their sound slightly from their debut album instead
of doing the easy option and making an 'Employment Part 2'.
