Generally speaking rock and metal since the beginning
have been absolutely dominated by the male population,
as of late there are a lot of female vocalists
emerging and who if anyone can take credit for
these kind of heavier style female vocalists shining
through? Well that’s safe to say Doro Pesch
formerly of Warlock certainly has such credentials.
Since 1983 this powerful woman has released 4
albums with Warlock and this new one being the
12th in her solo career, dubbing her as the “Metal
Queen” is more than safe to say. Not only
does she have a fantastic set of vocal chords
but she is also a very beautiful woman, if that’s
not enough to give reason to buy this album then
perhaps the addition of guest appearances from
the likes of Gus G (Firewind/Ozzy Osbourne) and
Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead) will be enough to
draw the money out of your wallets.
We start off as is expected with a crowd friendly
anthem which also happens to be the title track,
it’s definitely powerful, I could lose my
shit to that at a gig. Now for the gobsmacking
part, “It Still Hurts” is a heartfelt
duet between Doro and Lemmy, he provides harmonious
clean vocals! I couldn’t believe it, more
so I didn’t believe it was Lemmy for a while
till I researched it properly. Also on “Grab
The Bull” shows Gus G showing what he does
best and melting faces with his impressive guitar
work especially that insane solo near the end
of the track. Seeing as her native tongue is actually
German she hasn’t forgotten where she comes
from throwing in “Engel” and “Freitheit”
for her people both of which are mellow and slightly
sinister.
There are a few mishaps from time to time throughout
the album, well not that just things that I would
change to push it that one step higher than it
is, but it’s still a pretty great album
and she can be proud and retain her Metal Queen
status 16 albums and 30 years down the line, it
doesn’t matter what she does now her legend
is solidified.
