Well now this is a much needed release, Eurovision
song contest 2006 winners and in their own right
Finnish hard rock legends Lordi have become extremely
popular and in all fairness its well deserved
as some of those songs are ridiculously infectious;
“Hard Rock Halleluiah”, “Devil
Is A Loser”, “Would You Love A Monster
Man” the list is absolutely endless in regards
to catchy Lordi tracks. From 2002 onwards they
released an album every 2 years with the most
recent “Babez For Breakfast” hitting
the shelves in 2010, breaking tradition an extra
year later in 2013 we are presented with “To
Beast Or Not To Beast” the costumes are
once again changed and are back in force with
a UK tour booked for may.
What I’m noticing about this album is that
on the surface it appears a bit more technical
with less upbeat tones and a more dark sinister
edge, “I Luv Ugly” shows how they’ve
still retained those sing-a-long catchy lines
with that. “The Riff” is packed full
of adrenaline inducing tones and tempo just like
the aggressive side of past Lordi but amplified!
Loving the fact they have so much diversity and
are still refusing to sell out their style. Much
like that is “I’m the Best”
which is more on the metal side than the hard
rock, a few of the songs drift in and out on that
genre specification throughout the album and it’s
planted a huge unstoppable grin on my face. I
must say where as some of their past work has
had a little bit of rock cliché worked
into it, usually highly present in the song titles,
there’s much less of it in this one but
“Happy New Fear” keeps that alive,
although still it is a beast of a track.
These alongside the likes of the extremely creepy
“Schizo Doll”, “Candy For The
Cannibal” and the strange finale “SCG6
Otus Butcher Clinic” makes for an extremely
powerful 6th studio album for the Finnish monster
group, this UK tour is going to be absolutely
insane and I for one cannot wait for it as I am
confirmed to be at the Birmingham date! See you
all in the pit!
