I feel I have been hiding under a rock for the past five years as I have
never heard of 30 Seconds To Mars until they released their current single
'Attack' a few weeks back. The bands debut album '30 Seconds to Mars' has
sold over 900,000 copies in the U.S since its release back in 2002. The
band are also currently headlining the Taste of Chaos tour in the USA playing
above great bands such as Senses Fail, Aiden and The Used. It’s weird
to see that 30 Seconds To Mars have been away from the music scene for over
four years and now they are back with their new album 'Beautiful Lie' they’re
being treated as one of the biggest bands in the world with headline tours
everywhere and the new album going platinum in the USA in no time at all.
30 Seconds To Mars are fronted by movie star Jared Leto who has starred
in films such as Fight Club and Requiem For A Dream to name a few. Whilst
most movie stars who start bands simply fail from the start due to the
fact they are just awful, Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds To Mars are
actually good at what they do and there is now living proof that some
actors have got what it takes to rock out.
'A Beautiful Lie' opens beautifully with the bands current single 'Attack'
which has a dance feel keyboard introduction, the song is a well produced
catchy number that is bound to get a lot of airplay on the radio due to
its catchiness. The album title track 'A Beautiful Lie' is a bit of a
strange track, it starts and finishes with a bit of a movie feel about
it with the strange intro and outro beats and the song is generally mellow
with very slow drum beats and mellow vocals which turn screamo for the
chorus.
'The Kill' is a great song that builds upon itself through each and every
verse and once it gets to its peak it goes right back to the start and
builds up again. A well written and good produced song. 'Was It A Dream?'
has a bit of a freaky introduction with the sounds of heavy wind and bad
rain for 15 seconds before an interesting drum solo comes in which is
shortly followed by soft guitars and soft vocals, the chorus is quite
mellow from most of the album, the song finishes with more bad weather
effects with thunder and heavy rain making this one of the best tracks
on the album.
'The Fantasy' is a great song with the way the vocals start off really
fast from the start and the chorus is a killer sing a long affair that
would be awesome to witness live. The album finishes with an acoustic
song called 'A Modern Myth' which is a good choice to close the album.
The UK version also comes with a couple of bonus tracks the first being
'Battle Of One' which starts with some heavy drum beats like your listening
to a tribe bashing away and the vocals are also really heavy. The second
extra song is 'Hunter' which is a bit of a strange track sticking to the
same slow pace throughout.
Jared Leto has proved with his band 30 Seconds to Mars is that not all
actors are shockingly bad musicians and the bands latest album 'A Beautiful
Lie' isn’t the best album I have heard but it is a good album. I
am pretty sure you won’t be able to hide from 30 Seconds To Mars
over the next twelve months as they seem to be touring everywhere.
4/5
