The Horrors are a five piece band from Southend, Essex and are just about
to release their debut album 'Strange House'. The band are fresh from taking
part of the NME rock tour where they got mixed receptions from the crowd
due to the bands all dressed in black, black hair and eyeliner and ball
breaking skin tight trouser wearing image and also, due to the bands unique
music style which you tend to love or hate.
'Strange House' opens up with 'Jack The Ripper' which is a pretty strange
song due to vocalist Faris Rotter's strange style of vocals. The song
does get better for the upbeat chorus shouts of "Jack The Ripper,
Jack the Ripper". 'Count in Fives' on the other hand is a great song
from the start, it has garage dance beats and the vocals sit in more nicely
with this sound.
The bands current single 'Gloves' was the first song I heard from the
Horrors and it’s different from what any band are doing at the moment
it’s an okay track but Faris Rotter's vocals just don’t seem
to fit in properly with the music of the guitars and organ. 'Excellent
choice' is a weird song as it’s like a fast spoken word track with
eerie sounds in the background and chants of pressure popping up every
now and again. 'Sheena Is a Parasite' is another pretty average sounding
song with repetitive vocals. 'Thunderclaps' is a cleverly named song that
starts off good with a keyboard and guitar introduction but once again
the vocals don’t fit in well with the bands music.
'Gil Sleeping' is a musical track and one of the best tracks on the album
due to the fact the band get to experiment with sounds and they don’t
get ruined by the vocals. The album closes with 'A Train Roars’,
the song has a long introduction and is a nice sounding song overall,
but comes a bit too late for me to enjoy this album.
'Strange House' is the most unique album I have ever heard and makes
The Horrors stand out from most bands around at the moment. However it
is not necessarily a good thing as they have come up with a sound that
you either love or hate and I’m not a lover of the sound myself.
The Horrors will have a set of fans who love them for being different
but I can’t see this album or any singles that are going to be released
from the album gaining the band any new fans.
2.5/5
