Fat Wreck Chords veterans Snuff are back with
their first studio album in over 9 years, the
band went on hiatus back in 2005 and a few years
later came out of hiatus to play a few shows over
in Japan as well as supporting NOFX on a few shows
across the UK but since then Snuff have been missing
from the music scene but that is about to change
with the release of “5-4-3-2-1, Perhaps?”
When it comes to Snuff albums you pretty much
know what you are going to get and “5-4-3-2-1,
Perhaps?” is no different as it is simply
Snuff playing their brand of street punk, the
vocals are still as gruff and raw sounding as
ever and the riffs still feature the same amount
of passion and energy as they did say 20 years
ago, the only difference is that Snuff are now
older and wiser, well the later statement is debatable.
The album opens up with ‘In The Stocks’
which starts with a mad flurry of clapping with
Duncan Redmonds coming in moments later with his
fast flowing vocals, instrumentally the song features
exactly what you would expect from Snuff such
as solid drum beats, fast chugging guitar riffs,
bouncy basslines and the odd trombone piece popping
up every now and again.
‘There Goes The Waltzinblack’ is easily
one of the strongest sounding tracks on the album,
it just sounds solid and flows ever so well, ‘Mumbo
Jumbo’ is also a solid sounding track which
is fast and furious sounding like old skool Rancid
after a mass amount of speed. ‘Mary Poppins’
lets you see Snuff in a slight different light
as they go down a more straight forward rock route
full of guitar solos and Duncan Redmonds taking
a break from his usual gruff sounding vocals to
lay down more straight forward singing.
In total the album features 11 tracks and finishes
with an acoustic version of the opening track
‘In The Stocks’ and it is so pleasing
on the ears as Snuff slow the song down a bit
and the stripped down instrumental work gives
Oliver Stewart to shine on his trombone and Duncan
Redmonds to fully concentrate on his vocals which
sound better than ever here.
Snuff fans are easily going to be happy with ‘5-4-3-2-1,
Perhaps?’ and will quickly snap it the album
up, will Snuff be able to bring some extra fans
to the table with this? I highly doubt it but
when you have had a musical career as long as
Snuff and have a fan base as dedicated as theirs
things like this doesn’t really matter.
