Deftones have just released their 7th studio album
‘Koi No Yokan’, the album’s
title is the Japanese term for the notion of love
at first sight and after listening to the album
over a couple of times the title seems to be relevant
as ‘Koi No Yokan’ is not only a stunning
album that Deftones fans are going to fall in
love with straight away but it is also one of
the best albums that the Deftones have released
in their lengthy career.
As soon as the album opens with ‘Swerve
City’ you just know that the next 50minutes
are going to a pleasure to take in as the song
takes you on a journey through various different
soundscapes as Frank Delgado plays an important
part mixing things up with his synths and keyboards
whilst Stephen Carpenter lays down some hard hitting
riffs as Chino Moreno’s vocals flow in such
a dreamy way over the ambient soundscapes.
‘Romantic Dreams’ follows on from
‘Swerve City’ and keeps to a similar
musical style from the opening track with only
Chino Moreno’s vocals giving the song more
of a boost as vocals change slightly throughout
the chorus which see’s Moreno beautifully
sing “I wish this night would never end”.
‘Leathers’ is easily one of the strongest
sounding tracks on the album opening in such an
explosive manner with Moreno shouting “Shedding
your skin, showing your texture, time to let everything
inside show, you’re cutting all ties now
and forever, time to let everything outside you”,
whilst the rest of the band come together with
a mix of heavy drums beats, guitar riffs and soundscapes
rising and falling to the tone of Mareno’s
vocals.
‘Poltergeist’ comes in full of punk
attitude and quickly morphs into a heavy track
which shows signs of early Deftones material as
the instrumental work builds up before crashing
down around you again and again
‘Rosemary’ is the most longest track
on the album clocking in at 6minutes and 53seconds,
it also happens to be the most diverse sounding
track on the album as the song works its way through
various different styles whilst ending with some
constant guitar riffs before the keyboards come
in to close the track in a beautiful way.
‘Koi No Yokan’ is a fantastic album
from the Deftones it is one of those albums which
grabs you within seconds as let’s face it
the opening seconds of ‘Swerve City’
are amazing and quite easily the best opening
moments of any album I have heard so far this
year, I have also found the more you listen to
‘Koi No Yokan’ the more enjoyable
it becomes as you start to soak up the ambient
soundscapes, the mellow and aggressive guitar
riffs and not to forget Mareno’s vocals
which are sounding better than ever. Overall I
really couldn’t recommend ‘Koi No
Yokan’ more, so head out and buy it now.
5/5
