The Punk goes Pop series is a very successful
set of compilation albums from Fearless Records
where they get some of the best pop, punk and
hardcore acts to cover some of the hottest chart
topping pop songs around at the time and the 5th
November see’s Fearless Records release
‘Volume 5’ of the Punk goes Pop series.
Punk Goes Pop ‘Volume 5’ is an very
interesting and diverse sounding compilation album
which features acts like Carly Rae Jepson, Justin
Bieber, Maroon 5, Coldplay, The Wanted, Bruno
Mars, Michael Jackson and 6 other artists being
covered by the likes of Craig Owens, Memphis May
Fire, Upon This Dawning, Crown The Empire, We
Came As Romans and many others.
The compilation kicks off with Memphis May Fire’s
cover of Bruno Mars ‘Grenade’, the
song is an interesting cover but Memphis May Fire
do play it a bit to safe keeping the song sounding
so much like the original apart from a few screamo
moments which come and go far too quickly.
Upon This Dawning proper mix things up with their
cover of Caly Rae Jepson’s ‘Call Me
Maybe’, the song opens up sounding so much
like the original and then suddenly about 10 seconds
in the song turns into a synth driven screamo
masterpiece which see’s Upon This Dawning
do everything they possibly can to make the song
sound different from the original.
We Came As Romans take on the task of covering
The Wanted’s ‘Glad You Came’
and they stay quite true to the original version
of the song but up the ante when it comes to the
vocals as for the majority of the song the vocals
sound as poppy as ever but just at the right time
We Came As Romans scream out “The universe
will never be the same, I’m glad you came’
in full ball breaking force and from this moment
the song twists and turns through pop/screamo
territory for the next minute or so.
Breathe Carolina cover Michael Jacksons ‘Billie
Jean’ but it seems that Breathe Carolina
have taken on a mammoth task that they can’t
quite get to succeed as they try to hard with
special effects on their vocals and pointless
synths which do nothing to improve an already
classic song.
Forever The Sickest Kids do a great job of covering
Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ as
The Maine covering Cyndi Laupers ‘Girls
Just Want To Have Fun’, whilst Craig Owen’s
cover of Coldplay’s ‘Paradise’
is so close sounding to the original but you can’t
help but full in love with Owen’s vocals
as he sings his heart out.
I really can’t see ‘Punk Goes Pop
Volume 5’ being everyone’s thing but
if you want to listen to some of the hottest bands
in the punk world improve, ruin and match some
of your guilty pleasures from the pop world then
this album is for you as it is full of surprises
and interesting moments but as mentioned above
not all band and song choices work well but are
still worth a listen.
