So Britain’s very own version of sleazy
glam rock from the likes of Steel Panther, Motley
Crue and are back with album number 2! Jettblack
really captured my attention last year with their
debut album “Get Your Hands Dirty”
which was punchy, upbeat hard rock infused with
glam, filthy pieces of music created with the
sole purpose of bringing to smut to the party
and having a riot. Seeing them on their headline
tour they just seem to fit that glam styled style
utilising sex as a musical weapon, it’s
a style of music that’s always imported
from America but never home grown, these guys
have turned the tables and started something to
fill a genuine need.
I really can’t lie to save my life, I am
a bit disappointed with what they’ve done,
not everything but certain things just didn’t
need changing. Mostly I’ve noticed it in
the tone of the instruments as they’ve tweaked
it to fit their “new” standard rock
sound, I use the quotation marks because it’s
a style that’s already been used a hundred
thousand times, I think they’ve messed around
with their tunings as well because it’s
much lower pitched this time around which for
me is a bummer as the last album always makes
me smile because it’s got a thick crunchy
higher pitched tone with a bouncy edge layered
with filthy lyrics, now it’s just a generic
rock backing which is less of a pick me up than
I was looking for. It’s not bad material
by any means, it just blends into the crowded
highway of rock material that doesn’t stand
out or provoke as much emotional response.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, there
are some saving graces on here like; “Sunshine”
which is not quite as upbeat but its right up
there, “Never Gonna Give It Up” which
is a ballad-esque 3 minutes and “Side Of
The Road” which retains some of the high
octane pace that the rest of the album lacks.
I am quite disappointed as it did not live up
to my expectations at all, I didn’t think
they would take this route but then again poorly
attended tours can do that to a band I suppose
but that doesn’t make it cool. Thanks for
the effort guys but I think I’ll stick to
“Get Your Hands Dirty”, it still to
this day puts a smile on my face, gives me the
urge to dance and gives me a boost when I’m
down, “Raining Rock” just doesn’t
give me what the previous still gives.
3/5
