Back in February it was announced that Australia’s
finest post-hardcore band The Amity Affliction
had signed to Roadrunner Records and within weeks
the band re-released their second album ‘Youngbloods’
on Roadrunner Records in a deluxe edition format
to cement their relationship with the label and
also to give something extra to their fans whilst
also reaching out to new fans in the process,
during this time The Amity Affliction were also
touring as much as they could whilst also working
on their third studio album ‘Chasing Ghosts’
which is due for release any day now.
‘Chasing Ghosts’ opens with the title
track and the song comes at you in a catchy nature
as Ahren Stringers clean cut vocals sound beautiful
as he sings his little heart out whilst screamo
master Joel Birch lets loose with his raw sounding
vocals at regular intervals which seem to be well
placed.
‘Life Underground’ is an instantly
accessible track as Ahren Stringers comes in with
his clean cut vocals whilst the rest of the band
jam together knocking out some big riffs which
become even bigger when Joel Birch comes in with
his screamo vocals at the 1minute 10seconds mark
as the band up their game with chunky riffs and
big drum beats to go alongside the vocals.
‘RIP Bon’ is easily the best track
on the album and one that hardcore The Amity Affliction
fans will fall in love with straight away as it
is extremely heavy and features a slight bit of
electronic trickery and lyrically the song is
written from the perspective of someone trying
to deal with the suicide of a friend who ends
up questioning things putting blame on themselves
and The Amity Affliction do well covering this
delicate subject in such a strong way.
As the album progresses it becomes more and more
melodic with Ahren Stringers clean cut vocals
taking over the airwaves especially throughout
the likes of ‘Open Letter’, ‘
I Heart H.C’, and ‘Flowerbomb’
which are all big melodic sounding songs.
I feel with ‘Chasing Ghosts’ The Amity
Affliction have created yet another great album
but I do feel that fans of the band and the post-hardcore
scene may feel that they have toned their sound
down slightly as the clean vocals dominate throughout
with the screamo vocals not coming in as often
as you would expect, also I feel that The Amity
Affliction have done well creating an concept
album which deals in life and death yet I am sure
that the hard hitting album art work is going
to cause some controversy for the band.
