Alright then what do we have here… it appears
we have yet another American metalcore act emerging
on the same sort of path of Woe Is Me and Of Mice
& Men, it seems to be the in thing at the
moment in America to start up a metalcore band
as it’s coming back as the “in thing”
at the moment. This stuff though isn’t the
aggressive distinctive metalcore I grew up on
like Killswitch Engage, All That Remains or Atreyu,
oh no this new brand tries to splice together
the heavy elements of Deathcore with the high
pitched “whiney vocals” associated
with the electro-pop genre.
Normally apart from A Day To Remember and a very
select few other of these types of acts I stay
away from them; then only thing that kept my interest
enough to review the album was I put on album
opener “Hush” to give it a chance,
what a freaking song I have to say, reminds me
with the aggressive start of the latest Caliban
offering, it’s got a lot of electro presence
as well with the mixture of clean vocals and growls
intertwining reminding me of Sonic Syndicate.
Don’t get me wrong the sound is no different
to anything done before by Escape The Fate, Falling
in Reverse, Blessthefall, the list goes on, but
it’s still an extremely upbeat party record
that I could have some fun with.
The clean vocals I can relate to not only a band
but a particular song, they are reminiscent of
fall out boy; lead single “Turbulence”
see’s the vocals at times to be pushed a
little bit too far and you can just hear it, makes
you shiver, the growls are strong and aggressive
but are lacking in range. They manage to make
their stuff infectious though so I’ll give
them their dues they’ve procured my interest;
“The Amazing Atom” features Kellin
Quinn from Sleeping With Sirens providing guest
vocals and apart from some of the lyrics being
more than cringe worthy the combination of vocals
is a beautiful thing.
I wasn’t overly thrilled when these electro
elements and all of these pop-esque elements started
finding their ways into metal music, some band’s
absolutely dominated it like The Browning, Korn
and Dead By April where as others just blended
into this sea of mediocrity where there were a
million bands that all sounded the same. Whilst
At The Skylines haven’t exactly put out
a record that will be the next big thing or push
the boundaries of the current scene, it is a lot
of fun and if executed in the correct way could
incite one of the biggest riots or parties know
to man live, so for that I can give them credit.
