Ever since Scouting For Girls released their self
titled debut album in 2007 they become a household
name and have enjoyed a good ride at the top of
the charts but for some reason working on their
third studio album ‘The Light Between Us’
nearly split them up and saw them work alongside
five different producers and clock up a lot of
studio time across different periods of time over
the past year and now they are back more confident
than ever with ‘The Light Between Us’
just released and the band claiming it to be their
strongest album so far.
‘The Light Between Us’ features eleven
upbeat three minute long tracks which have a massive
happy energetic summer feel and Scouting For Girls
couldn’t of picked a better time to release
the album as after a nonexistent UK summer it
seems like the sun has finally found its way to
grace us and I am sure a few people will make
the most of the BBQ weather and this could quite
likely be their playlist.
The album starts off with a piano introduction
and Roy Stride singing “I Want You Back
Naked, I Want You Back Naked’ as the band
kick off with ‘Without You’ a song
which they wrote back in 2011 and played it to
a sold out crowd at their one off Forestry commission
show at Westonbirt Arboretum back in June 2011
when the song was still in its demo stages with
a working title of ‘Naked’ , the song
has all the classic Scouting For Girls elements
and perfectly sets the pace for the album.
‘Summertime In The City’ is the latest
single from Scouting For Girls and is easily the
perfect soundtrack for the summer of 2012 with
Roy stride singing “Oh, oh, oh I hope that
it doesn’t rain It’s summer, it’s
summer, it’s summer in the city” which
is something that pretty much everyone in Britain
can relate to this year, musically the song is
big and catchy and easily up there with previous
Scouting For Girls singles.
‘Love How It Hurts’ was released as
a single back in May 2011 which by a time scale
shows the struggle that Scouting For Girls had
creating ‘The Light Between Us’, the
song is still as listenable now as it was when
it was originally released.
‘Snakes And Ladders’ and ‘Six
Degrees’ are both massively catchy tracks
which have the potential to be future singles
and they all have quirky lyrics which stand out
for the better such as “Even though you
play me like an Xbox I don’t want you to
take your hands off me, me, me” in ‘Snakes
And Ladders’ and “There’s only
six degrees between you and me we’re on
the same path you just got a head start”
in ‘Six Degress.
‘Rocky Balboa’ is an interesting song
that a lot of people will be raising their eyebrows
to ,the song is as catchy and melodic as you would
expect from Scouting For Girls but it is catchy
to the point that it starts to sound slightly
cheesy but you still end up singing-a-long and
loving the song and not taking note of the cheesyness
until it is far too late and the song is already
spinning around your head.
The album closes with ‘Make This The Last
One’ a song which see’s Scouting For
Girls tone things down for the first time in their
career as they go down a slight sad yet mature
route which they pull off extremely well .
With ‘The Light Between Us’ Scouting
For Girls have done what they always do and created
an album full of big catchy sing-a-long songs
which all have the potential to be future singles
well apart from ‘Make This The Last One’,
unless they do want to prove to the world that
they can break their own rule book and pen a slow
paced song.
