The 24th September see’s Bowling For Soup
releasing ‘One Big Happy’ which is
a compilation album but a compilation album like
none other, the album features Bowling For Soup,
Patent Pending and The Dollyrots, it features
10 tracks and runs for just under 32minutes and
it features a brand new song from each band plus
each band covers a song from the other two bands
back catalogue and if that wasn’t enough
for you Jaret Reddick from Bowling For Soup teams
up with Kelly Ogden from The Dollyrots for an
hilarious duet to close the album.
‘One Big Happy’ is being released
a couple of weeks before the three bands head
over to the UK to embark on a 15 date tour which
also happens to be Bowling For Soup’s 30th
tour of the UK which must be some kind of record
for an American band.
The album opens with ‘Let’s Go To
The Pub’ which happens to be a brand new
song from Bowling For Soup which takes a cheeky
look on British peoples favourite pastime of going
to the pub, the song is well written with quirky
lyrics stating how it doesn’t matter if
we are sad or happy had some good or bad news
any reason is good enough to go to the pub, the
song features the solid and bouncy sound everyone
has grown to love about Bowling For Soup over
the years and is also bound to become an anthem
at the forthcoming UK tour and all Bowling For
soup tours in the future.
Listening to some of the covers you may feel cheated
out of money because some of them sound so similar
to the original but just with a different singer
such as when The Dollyrots cover ‘The Bitch
Song’ they do it well but they don’t
do anything to rival or sound different from the
original, however Patent Pending defiantly know
how to rework someone else’s song as their
cover of the recent Dollyrots song ‘Hyperactive’
is fantastic , so good in fact it sounds better
than the Dollyrots own version of the song, part
of this is down to Joe Ragosta’s unique
sounding vocals and the general tightness of the
band.
The stand out moment on the album comes from Patent
Pending with their brand new song ‘Pyscho
In Love’ which is a quirky written song
that will be lodged in your head within seconds
and trust me it will take a lot for it to get
out of your head but then again I wouldn’t
know why you would want to forget such a great
song.
The album closing track ‘Lova Ya, Love Ya,
Love Ya’ is a twisted love song where Reddick
and Ogden complement each other so well with their
vocals with a slight Bowling For Soup meets the
Dollyrots vibe running throughout.
‘One Big Happy’ is an interesting
release and a perfect album to pick up for anyone
going to the tour or anyone who wants a starting
point with The Dollyrots and/or Patent Pending
as I’m sure the big mix of songs is enough
to please most people.
