Spector - Enjoy It while It LastsSpector – Enjoy It while It Lasts

Spector are the most exciting new indie band since The Maccabees burst on the scene back in 2007 with their debut album ‘Colour It In’ and if their debut album ‘Enjoy It While It Lasts’ is anything to go by then Spector surly will have a future as bright or if not brighter than that of The Maccabees who are still going extremely strong.

Over the past couple of years the indie scene has been a bit of a dire scene with long running bands like Oasis calling it a day, Arctic Monkeys releasing lacklustre albums one after another and only a small crop of bands such as The Maccabees, Kasabian and The Killers keeping the scene above sinking point so it seems that Spector have picked the best time to burst on the scene with their debut album ‘Enjoy It While It Lasts’ as it really does give the indie scene the big boost it has been crying out for.

‘Enjoy It while It Lasts’ is an album which see’s Spector bring a bit of old and new to the indie scene and give it a big poppy mix, the whole album has an 80’s vibe running through it and throughout different songs you can feel the influences of bands such as The Killers The Strokes, The Klaxons and The Kaiser Chiefs, all bands which the members of Spector grew up listening to.

The album opens in a heartfelt way with frontman Fred Macpherson singing “I tasted a hundred friends of mine on your lips, I never saw a single sunset out on that strip, If it was love, If it was love, Then let me know” as he looks back at an relationship with an ex, as the song progresses it picks up the pace and morphs into a catchy little number.

‘Chevy Thunder’ has clearly been written for the radio as it has a massive radio play feel about it and flows at such an fast pace and includes an chant-a-long chorus of “Chevy thunder, chevy, chevy thunder” , you would easily be forgiven for sticking this song on repeat and forgetting the rest of the album for a couple of hours, but just make sure you unclick the repeat button at some point as many more gems are waiting over the next ten tracks.

‘Grey Shirt And Tie’ see’s Spector go a tad serious and tone things down for just over 3minutes, the song is a good listen and features an interesting set of electronic synths which sound like a bell on repeat popping up every 5 seconds making the song that little bit more enjoyable.

‘Twenty Something’ is an fun sounding disco/pop song which has a massive sing-a-long chorus which makes me think that this could easily be a future hit single for the band. ‘Friday Night, Don’t Ever Let It End’ is another big fun catchy track which also has the potential to be a future hit single.

One of the most enjoyable bits about ‘Enjoy It While It Lasts’ is the fact that one minute you will be listening to an extremely upbeat song like ‘Friday Night, Don’t Ever Let It End’ and then the next you are listening to the ever so relaxed ‘Lay Low’ which makes you want to reach for a pipe whilst listening to the beautiful instrumental arrangements and then the next minute you will be wanting to jump for joy whilst listening to ‘Upset Boulevard’.

Everything about ‘Enjoy It While It Lasts’ is spot on from the quirky looking retro artwork to the bands more upbeat poppy indie tracks to the more low key chilled out tracks, the sound throughout may well be diverse with no two tracks sounding the same but I can guarantee you that you will not find a dull sounding track here as Spector have made 12 brilliant 3 and a half minute anthems.
