Following the mountain of success gained from his
latest solo project releasing their debut back in
2010, guitar hero Slash has burst back on the scene
once again this time using Myles Kennedy as the
standalone lead vocalist as opposed to the debut’s
all star cast. The surrounding sold out tours from
the album proved a huge success for the ex-G’NR
axe slinger and Myles went down an absolute storm
every single night so this permanent line up selection
was an inevitable choice, but the question is can
they still pull this off without the attraction
and publicity the list of high profile guest musician
diversity that the last album brought to the table?
The first few times I listened to the record I had
some very mixed feelings and opinions in regard
to its style, to be honest it was nothing to do
with the music as I felt that was just as diverse
and bouncy as ever before, my problem believe it
or not was with one of my all time favourite vocalists
Mr Myles Kennedy. At first it was tracks like “Apocalyptic
Love” and “One last Thrill” that
I thought his voice had become just that little
bit too whiney, and don’t get me wrong I still
have that feeling a little bit but I appear to have
grown to love it as these are 2 of my favourite
tracks from the album now. The thing is with this
release is that with each additional listen the
material drills itself further and further into
your brain storing all the beautiful melodies and
catchy lyrics.
Just songs like “Anastasia” are where
Slash and Myles really pull themselves apart from
other musicians as this is where they thrive, gentle
tones that don’t take away from interesting
guitar work with Myles using his full range from
deep to high pitch to really give the vocals a boost;
“Bad Rain”, “No More Heroes”
and “Not For Me” all use this structure
to its full potential. The difference between this
and the last album is that with the previous album
there was a huge variety of styles to fit each singer’s
different sound, this however took 1 style to fit
Myles and due to his vast range they’ve really
made a record with depth and variation hitting both
ends of the spectrum and dotting along every point
in between.
