Teenage Bottlerocket are one of the most exciting
bands on the Fat Wreck Chords roster and they have
just released their fifth studio album ‘Freak
Out!’ which see’s them keep to their
same well crafted formula of short fast and furious
punk rock anthems that make you want to bounce up
and down like a speed riddled man participating
in a pogo stick race.
The album opens with title track ‘Freak
Out!’ which is a 39minute repetitive introduction
where Ray Carlisle sings about freaking out whilst
the rest of the band jam along in an upbeat positive
way. ‘Headbanger’ follows the opening
track up in an hilarious way with Carlisle telling
a tell about a guy giving himself a concussion
from head banging too much, the lyrics are well
written and in general the song brings so much
fun to the table and it is guaranteed that this
is a song that you will be repeating time and
time again.
‘Cruising For Chicks’ is exactly
what it says on the tin and see’s Teenage
Bottlerocket go down quite a heavy route with
some chunky guitar riffs making up a good portion
of the track. ‘Necrocomicon’ is another
hilarious track and will bring out the nerdy side
in you whilst Carlisle sings about going to San
Diego comic Con and potentially seeing Yoda, Captain
Kirk and various other members of the sci-fi universe.
‘Maverick’ deals with Top Gun and
love and it deals with these subjects in such
a fun and fast way. ‘Done With Love’
see’s Teenage Bottlerocket go all pop on
us with a soppy love song. ‘Punk House Of
Horror’ originally featured on the bands
2011 EP ‘Mutilate Me’ and is such
a beast of a track with a big catchy vibe that
the band had to include it on this album aswell.
With ‘Freak Out!’ Teenage Bottlerocket
have created yet another collection of punk rock
gems, hardcore fans of the band are going to feel
like they have gone to Bottlerocket heaven whilst
anyone who has an ear for punk rock but are yet
to come across Teenage Bottlerocket may just be
about to find their new favourite band, also I
can’t think of a better way to brighten
up this depressing summer.
