It doesn’t feel like yesterday I was sat here
in this very spot overly excited about reviewing
their (at the time) new release “Days of Deliverance”
even though that was 2 years ago, with that release
I found the lead single “World on Fire”
to be one of my all time favourite of Firewind’s
songs but apart from that the rest of the album
was good but not on par with the classics. Since
then lead guitarist Gus G has recorded an album
and toured the world with Ozzy Osbourne and had
2 years to prepare material for this latest album,
has being a part of a band with heavy metals largest
icon rubbed off on the youngster and will this sense
of maturity rub off on Firewind’s style?
After 2006’s “Allegiance” the
press hasn’t really been a big fan of the
bands work, 2008’s “The Premonition”
came under fire when I thought it was a spectacular
album, the points were valid regarding the tone
and the speed coming down but songs like “Into
The Fire” and “Head Up High” were
outstanding. This latest output then (don’t
worry I haven’t forgot the point of the review)
hasn’t really got much to live up to so they
could afford to experiment a bit more here; which
they do, right from the get go there is something
different about the sound, I can’t put my
finger on it but it’s definitely there.
Starting with the opener “Wall of Sound”
it kicks off the album on an up-tempo note with
the speed we’ve become so accustomed to hearing
from these guys, catchy vocal lines and impressive
guitar work on display you couldn’t really
ask for more; “Few Against Many”, “The
Undying Fire”, “Another Dimension”,
“Destiny” and “Long Gone Tomorrow”
all follow this same structure, they’re all
ridiculously catchy and bouncy. The other songs
though like “Edge of a Dream” which
features the band Apocalyptica which is an incredible
ballad - that is as astounding as it is due to the
talents of Gus G and Apollo Papathanasio mixing
alongside the beautiful instrumental talents of
Apocalyptica - are of a softer nature but still
retaining a gritty edge.
I think it’s this diversity but overall the
fact that even the softer songs like “Losing
My Mind” still have a heavier side to them
than songs for example on “The Premonition”
that edges the album up in the critics eyes, hence
why I’ve seen positive things written about
the album. Another thing to bear in mind is that
like the previous album this one is a grower, the
first time you listen through you may not connect
to it (I didn’t at first) but give it a few
more chances and believe me you will begin to love
it.
4/5
