Album Review
Architects - DaybreakerArchitects – Daybreaker

Brighton’s post hardcore mob Architects are back with their new album “Daybreaker” within a year of their previous effort “The Here and now”. After the sheer vicious style of “Hollow Crown” fans seemed a little bit let down with “The Here and Now” toning their heavier roots back a bit in favour of more gentle melodies; whilst “Daybreaker” definitely see’s the bands more aggressive side returning, they’re still clinging to the gentle melodies attempting to reach some form of middle ground between the two releases as to not make their effort in experimenting a waste. It’s miles away from the bands earlier work, many many miles but somehow they’ve kept the gritty edge but added this really deep, beautiful sound to it and brought out something distinctive.

“The Bitter End” is one of those introductory songs that starts off silent but grows until eventually erupting leading off into “Alpha Omega” which works their heavier side around some beautiful chorus lines you cannot help but sing along to. Then there’s “These Colours Don’t Run” which is a complete beast; high octane aggression, thick riffs mixed among twangy fillers and what an ending as well once the song hits 3:11 the whole thing just drops into a really dirty breakdown seeing out the remainder of the song, “Even If You Win, You’re Still a Rat” encompasses a similar layout. They’ve kept up their heavier side to please the hardcore fans but it’s songs like “Truth, Be Told” and “Unbeliever” that I think will stir the most backlash from the more veteran of the bands fan base as it’s a lot more gentle than anything we’ve been used to hearing from the lads before, beautiful as it may be and I personally enjoy it but it was definitely a risky move.

I only got into the band when they released “Hollow Crown” and I thought that album was a complete beast, that’s why when I back tracked through their past stuff and saw it was all in the same vein I was expecting follow up’s to try and push that style even further, but instead it would appear they instead wanting to tone it back a bit, perhaps not to ruin the style in which they can come back to in years to come when they’ve figured out where to go with it. I hope it’s that and not the beginning of a sell out move because we’ve had enough bands go down that road in recent times, whilst I like “The Here and Now” and even more so this latest output this was never the band that they set out to be.

One thing I can give them kudos for is that they definitely learned from their mistakes with their past release and the heavier tracks I’ve already mentioned along with “Devil’s Island” and “Feathers of Lead” prove they’re progressing in a more recognisable direction and are really God damn enjoyable. As much as the heavier side of their fan base may complain I must definitely give credit where it’s due and say fair play for playing around and keeping stuff fresh and it proves Sam Carter can freaking sing.
