The Front Bottoms are a two piece band from New
Jersey made up of Brian Sella on acoustic guitar
and Matthew Uychich on drums and they have quite
a fancy sounding punk meets indie vibe about them
and they are set to release their self titled debut
album on the 11th June through Banquet Records.
The debut album by ‘The Front Bottoms’
is quite an exciting listen which see’s
Sella and Uychich tackle many different true to
life subjects like love, growing up, friends,
family and so much more, the album opens with
the wonderful ‘Flashlight’ which starts
off with some beautiful acoustic guitar strumming
before sella comes in with lyrics of "Please
fall asleep so I can take pictures of you and
hang them in my room" and as the song progresses
Brian takes you further down the route of an awkward
near obsessive story about liking a girl.
‘Maps’ is a great song which sees
the band tackle the theme of having big plans
for life but them slowly slipping away as time
goes on and you ending up slightly mad and broke
as a touring musician, the song finishes with
really meaningful lyrics of “One day you'll
be washing yourself with hand soap in a public
bathroom and you'll be saying, how did I get here?
Where the hell am I? If the roles were reversed,
you could have seen me sneaking up sneaking up
from behind”.
When it comes to writing lyrics The Front Bottoms
are at the top of their game as each and every
song on the album you can relate to in some way
or another take ‘Mountain’ for example
Sella talks about buying fireworks and lighting
them up when he gets home, getting arrested and
having his summer ruined, now you can’t
fully relate to these lyrics but at the same time
you can see where Sella is coming from and as
the song progresses he sings out “Stop taking
pictures with your phone, stop taking pictures
with your phone” which is easily related
to as phone cameras are a love and hate thing
depending on the individual.
‘The Beers’ is a genius of a song
and it has quite an aggressive raw edge about
it and reminds me very much of earlier semi acoustic
Alkaline Trio material where Dan Andriano and
Matt Skiba put proper raw emotion into their music,
Sella’s lyrics here are louder and clearer
than ever whilst the drum beats from Uychich are
proper full on.
One of the stand out tracks on the album is ‘Rhodes
Island’ as the lyrical content is quite
humorous and the way the band play their music
is a full on energetic way with a real positive
catchy edge and I am sure before the song closes
you will be singing “It’s probably
just my friends fucking around, yeah it’s
just my friends fucking around” alongside
Sella.
With their debut album The Front Bottoms have
made a perfect album where everything flows ever
so smoothly and they have come up with a sound
that makes you think that there are more than
two members in the band as there is always so
much going on at once, if you are yet to hear
the Front Bottoms then I suggest you give the
opening track ‘Flashlight’ a listen
as I am sure that a few seconds after hearing
sella’s unique vocals come in here you will
be instantly hooked.
