The third Tenacious D album ‘Rize OF The Phoenix’
is set to be released on the 14th May and it is
the band’s first album in 6 years and the
follow up to their hit album ‘The Pick Of
Destiny’ which was also turned into a hit
Hollywood movie, now a lot of people thought Tenacious
D had hanged up their guitars and left the music
scene but Tenacious D are now back with a 13 track
album that is full of hilarity and the crude randomness
that we have come to expect from them over the years.
‘Rize Of The Phoenix’ tells the story
of what Tenacious D have been up to since they
hit the big time with ‘The Pick Of Destiny’
and it sees them add a lot of humour and pretty
much take the piss out of themselves throughout
pinpointing how Jack hit the big time making movies
whilst Kyle hit an all time low and went crazy
until Jack came back to rescue him and attempt
to smash the music industry again.
The album opens with the title track ‘Rize
Of The Phoenix’, lyrically it covers how
after they released ‘The Pick Of Destiny’
everyone thought the band were down but they are
ready to rise again like a phoenix, instrumentally
it sounds like AC/DC style classic rock with a
big tubthumping drum beat thanks to Dave Grohl
who once again covers all drum duties throughout
the album, the track is easily one of the strongest
sounding tracks on the album and is the perfect
come back track for Tenacious D.
‘Low Hanging Fruit’ see’s Tenacious
D carry on the charm with a fast paced track.
‘Classic Teacher’ is a humours sketch
where Jack Black states how Tenacious D are nearly
as good as Arcade Fire and then goes on to tell
Kyle Gass he needs guitar lessons from a Spanish
guitar teacher which ends up being Jack Black
dressed up and things get quite funny.
‘Senorita’ is a real fun Spanish
sounding track with quite humours lyrics and fast
paced guitar work. ‘Deth Starr’ opens
up sounding quite mellow but then suddenly at
the 58 seconds mark out of nowhere the song becomes
a full on rock n roll affair with Tenacious D
blasting out the heaviest track on the album which
has some fantastic riffs.
‘Roadie’ see’s Tenacious D
sing about roadies who are extremely important
to bands but also very underappreciated at times
and lyrics like “Without me, There’d
be no lights on stage” and “without
me there’d be no sound from those amps”
leave you understanding just how important roadies
actually are.
‘The Balled Of Hollywood Jack And The Rage
Kage’ is one of the best tracks featured
on the album it pretty much tells a 5 minute story
of how Jack became famous and Kyle lost the plot
and how Jack came back to help Kyle, instrumentally
the song features a strong acoustic guitar sound
throughout whilst the song takes a slight pan
pipe direction towards the later part, vocally
Jack Black is at his best with strong gritty sounding
vocals.
‘They Fucked Our Asses’ is could
of easily been the stand out track on the album
because it covers quite a funny topic but also
see’s Tenacious D unleash the metal with
some monster riffs and general heavy instrumental
but sadly just as it gets started the song comes
to a quick end.
It is great to see Tenacious D back and once
again they have created an album that they could
easily make another movie about to back it up,
musically ‘Rize OF The Phoenix’ may
not be breaking any boundaries but it is yet another
album under the belts of Tenacious D that is mixed
with hilarious moments and kick ass tracks.
