The first release from Exeter rockers, Talula, is a three-track with more
variety than a bag of dolly mixtures.
The first track, also the title track, is my personal favourite and worth
full marks alone. A catchy opening that remains as a brilliant song through,
skipping effortlessly from the verse to a fast-faced heavier chorus, with
note perfect vocal harmonies, and back.
The second track, Sojourn, is, interesting. It starts off with some strange
electro noises, which start off another catchy verse, but then an out
of place “uh,” starts off a chorus that just doesn't work.
Maybe it's just the recording, I hope so, but it all sounds very crunchy,
tinny, and not levelled out correctly, with a vocal line far too loud.
Besides the AS-level recording, which isn't the band's fault, it's a good
track.
The third and final track, the vocalist's favourite, is an acoustic track
called The Battle And The Beauty. Good chord sequences, admirable vocals,
and all in all, beauty. With a minute to go when the full band does kick
in, there's no battle. So the beauty remains, an awesome song.
4/5
