Lostprophets have just released their fifth studio
album ‘Weapons’, and over the years
the band have been building on their success with
albums climbing to the top of the album charts
on release day and tours selling out in minutes
and it seems that is still the case with the release
of ‘Weapons’ which peaked at number
9 in the UK album chart but I have to say that
‘Weapons’ is the first Lostprophets
album that has taken me a long time to get into
and fully understand and enjoy.
On your first, second and even third listen of
‘Weapons’ you would be forgiven for
wondering what the hell the Lostprophets have
done as the album will flow through with nothing
really standing out but after each and every listen
songs start to stand out to the point where you
easily pin point future singles.
The album opens with ‘Bring Em Down’
a song which is full of fast paced chunky guitar
work which they are well known for, the chorus
is quite explosive with a slight chant-a-long
vibe whilst the backing synths help pack in that
signature Lostprophets sound even more.
‘We Bring An Arsenal’ has a really
catchy vibe with Ian Watkins vocals flowing at
such a killer pace with such an cock sure rocking
vibe, the chorus is the most infectious moment
of the album with the band singing “Way
o way o lalalala”, and just for the killer
chorus alone I can see this being a Lostprophets
summer single and the perfect festival sing-a-long
moment.
‘Jesus Walks’ is another future single
as it has that radio 1 mainstream feel running
throughout it and is an extremely enjoyable song
which becomes even more enjoyable once the infectious
lyrics become permanently lodged in your brain.
‘A Song From Where Im From’ is another
song that sounds like it could be an future single
as it flows ever so perfectly from start to finish.
There are no true dull moments on ‘Weapons’
each and every song is enjoyable but it all just
depends on how much of a chance you give the album
as I know of a few people that really couldn’t
get into the album and gave up on it after a couple
of listens but overall the Lostprophets have kept
to their winning formula but also ditched the
heaviness that was featured on their last album
‘The Betrayed’ and kept more to that
top 40 mainstream sound that they have been heavily
known for in the past, I know a lot of people
will be turned off with ‘Weapons’
but you have to give Lostprophets respect for
being one of the only bands keeping the UK rock
scene alive.
