“Heatseeker,” the Hedrons third and most recent single to be
released, launches you into the album. It's a single previously reviewed
on this site, so I won't repeat myself, but it's a powerful track with a
heavy bass riff that carries the song, below an awesome vocal track and
a whining guitar riff, oozing simplicity yet boasting genius. A fantastic
start to an album, the only problem is that you know it's all downhill from
there. It's not that the rest of the album is terrible, it's that Heatseeker
is so good.
Track two, “Couldn't Leave Her Alone,” has been available
on the website for a while now; a great mix of poppy riffs, vocal harmonies,
and upbeat rhythms.
Tracks three and four, are the band's first two singles, “I Need
You,” and “Be My Friend.” Well, let's just say it's
clear why these were chosen as the singles.
The band's punk roots shine through in “Stop Look And Listen,”
a high tempo-d songs, bursting with energy.
The energy doesn't disappear really anywhere in the album until the last
track, and that's only slightly, when the pace lessens fractionally. The
longest track on the album, “What Am I To Do” is full of skilled
guitar playing, and a vocal line that, especially in the verse, slows
down dramatically.
This is an impressive album for a first release; Scottish rock at its
best. Forty-five minutes of upbeat female-fronted music, and even better
when witnessed live.
4.5/5
