Max Cavalera returns to his Brazilian metal group
Soulfly to bring forth their 8th studio album
“Enslaved”. The vast amount of powerful
themes that the band has tackled with their albums
is astounding, this particular album is heavily
based on slavery.
Intro track “Resistance” kicks off
this album in vintage Soulfly fashion; slowly
building up bringing in each musician gradually
in their typical tribal metal style, before ending
with an ominous backing and leading off into “World
Scum”. Now this song is a bit of a letdown
for me personally, featuring Cattle Decapitation
vocalist Travis Ryan providing guest vocals its
quite clear that the band have structure this
song to suit his deathcore background, which quite
frankly sucks because that’s not why people
listen to Soulfly. Thankfully it’s only
that song that is subjected to those sorts of
influences and “Intervention” takes
us back to normal; chunky riffs, high tempo and
heavy beat.
Now I’m excited to tackle “Redemption
of Man by God” which features Dez Fafara
of Devildriver providing guest vocals; what an
amazing war between Dez and Max, their vocals
integrate together within this track amazingly
well, easily my favourite track of the album due
to the quality of the vocals and the perfectly
structured musical accompaniment. The final track
to have guests on it is the last track “Revengeance”.
This song features all 3 of Max’s sons;
Zyon playing drums, Iggor on guitar andRichie
providing guest vocals, this song is confirmation
that the Cavalerabloodline has some serious talent
in it, groovy heavy metal with the vocal lines
of Satan and his spawn.
The rest of the tracks are just your standard
classic Soulfly tracks; “Gladiator”
is as heavy and bouncy as ever, “Treachery”
has an aggressive tempo and “Plato O Plomo”
has a pretty thick riff with some pretty extreme
flamenco exploration involved. So there we have
it, a strong fresh album from one of the masters
of thrash metal, couldn’t really ask for
much more.
