Just before Xmas Swound! Were busy on the road
supporting Electric Six and I happened to go along
to one of the shows and thought that Swound! Proper
nailed it on the live circuit so to say that I
have been waiting for their debut album ‘Into
The Sea’ is an understatement, the album
is finally due for release on the 5th March through
the bands own label The Grelmin Corporation and
after listening to it many times over I can really
see it help launch this band of brothers further
to stardom.
‘Into The Sea’ is a really fun sounding
album which is packed with 12 fun and uplifting
songs, the album runs for just under 40minutes
and whilst listening to it you will find yourself
feeling extremely cheerful and also thinking back
to those days of when you were a child as the
album has a big retro feel which comes across
amazingly fun and happy.
The album opens with ‘Your Kids Are Gonna
Love It’ a short yet randomly crafted song
that pushes geek rock to the limit, seriously
Swound! Have come together and kicked off with
one of the most perfect opening songs I have heard
on an album in a long time, the song is extremely
unpredictable, see’s the band talking about
time travel and has enough groove for you to want
to get your dancing shoes on and bounce along
to in a moment of frenzy.
‘Big Trouble’ opens with some fantastic
guitar riffs whilst Joe Staszkiewicz comes in
seconds later with his weezer-esque vocals and
moments later the whole band come in with backing
vocals of “big trouble, big big trouble”,
the song is extremely melodic and a song which
pretty much everyone can relate to as let’s
be honest we have all been in trouble before and
some of us are still getting in trouble.
‘Tokyo’ is one big sing-a-long song
and after listening to it a couple of times it
has given me the urge to jet off to ‘Tokyo’
as the song is so fun sounding which has now gave
me the impression that Toyko is just as fun.
‘If Only I Could’ is lyrically a great
track which once again a lot of people can relate
to with the opening lyrics of “I have a
two litre bottle of Dr Pepper, it’s Friday
night and the world is at my feet, there’s
just one little thing that’s bugging me,
why am I sitting here mix tapes of Dawn Of The
Dead, why do I even care”, as we have all
had those comfy sofa nights in when there are
various parties to be had elsewhere.
‘Oh No!’ is another solid track which
has a solid radio friendly feel running through
it with the mix of full on guitar riffs, constant
drum beats and Joe’s near spoken word vocals
in places and not to forget the rest of the band
who chip in with random vocal sounds.
If you happened to hear the band’s current
single ‘In My Head’ and you like it
then you really need to give Into The Sea’
a listen as ‘In My Head’ is a great
track but there are another 11 track tracks featured
on the album which easily match the greatness
of the single. If you are keen on bands like The
Xcerts, Weezer and even earlier Brand New material
then I am sure that Swound! Are that new band
that you have been looking for and I know for
sure won’t be putting this album down for
a very long time.
