Bowling For Soup are one of the best geeky pop-punk bands around and are
back with their ninth studio album 'The Great Burrito Extortion Case' which
is named from a TV news item about a mans failed attempt to sue Taco Bell
by hiding a dead mouse in his fast food order. The album title shows how
randomly humorous Bowling For Soup still are.
'The Great Burrito Extortion Case' is a well written, energetic, funny
pop punk album which will have the fans hooked. The catchy intro of 'Epiphany'
opens the album up and is quite a serious sounding song but things soon
change for the seriously catchy lead single 'High School Never Ends'.
The song is one of the best songs I have ever heard from BFS and is about
the obsession of Hollywood. The lyrics are clever and funny with many
celebrities being name checked such as Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Their
seems to be a celebrity theme throughout the album with track three being
called 'Val Kilmer' which is lyrically one of the most entertaining songs
on the album with Adam Sandler, Kevin Costner and many more celeb’s
also being name checked.
One of the most interesting tracks on the album is 'I’m Gay', it
musically sounds different from what you’re normally used to from
BFS with different sounding musical styles throughout and it is lyrically
hilarious and you can just imagine thousands of people at BFS shows chanting
'I’m Gay'. Things slow down a bit for the more serious sounding
'Why Don't I Miss You' but soon pick up for the lyrically hilarious 'A
Friendly Goodbye' which is a lot more catchy and funnier than your typical
break up song, with lyrics of "Here's a friendly goodbye 5,6,7; Ain't
that a "b" with an, a'int that a mother trucker" and also
chants of "F U". 'Love Sick Stomach Ache (Sugar Coated Accident)'
is a pretty weird sounding song but really grows on you after every listen
and I really like how the chorus builds up on you.
The great thing about Bowling For Soup is they make the best pop punk
songs ever and also shine when they decide to make a more serious song
such as 'Much More Beautiful Person' which sounds a lot different than
most of the album, and the same with 'When We Die' which is a beautiful
sounding song that is just asking to be released as a single.
Over the thirteen years and counting BFS have been together they have
managed to better themselves with every album release and 'The Great Burrito
Extortion Case' has some of the best songs BFS have ever made and most
probably the funniest lyrics you will ever hear.
