If you are a regular reader of Alternative Vision
then you will know that I love Alkaline Trio and
pretty much anything that Matt Skiba or the other
members of the band get up and at the moment Matt
Skiba has gone all out with side projects with
the recent announcement of Matt Skiba And The
Sekrets signing to Superball Music and also The
Hell which happens to be his most recent side
project which see’s him team up with Atom
Willard (Angels And Airwaves, The Offspring).
The Hell have just released their debut EP ‘Sauve
Les Requins’ and it is a short straight
up 4 track punk rock EP which runs for just under
10 minutes and throughout the mere 10 minutes
both Matt Skiba and Atom Willard are on top form
and stay true to the punk rock roots and sound
of their early days.
The EP opens with ‘Gasoline’ a track
which oozes in that classic early day Alkaline
Trio sound, but in all honesty what else could
you expect when it comes to Matt Skiba knocking
out short punk rock anthems, vocally the song
is extremely catchy whilst instrumentally Willard
gives his drums one hell of a beating whilst Skiba
kicks out some tasty riffs.
‘Vas Te Faire Requins’ is a great
song which is full of angst and big lyrical shouts
of “Fuck You”, the song flows just
as well as the opening track ‘Gasoline’.
‘No Where Left’ is an extremely sing-a-long
old skool sounding punk rock anthem which will
have you singing the simple lyrics of “woaaaaaaah”
over and over again in time at all.
‘R R R’ is the first song that I heard
from The Hell a couple of days before they released
this EP and as soon as I heard it I was hooked
as it is such a simple punk rock song with that
classic Matt Skiba guitar and vocal feel whilst
Willard adds a slight different edge from what
Matt’s Alkaline Trio band mates would, the
lyrics are quite simple and very repative with
Matt singing “Regreat, repent, repeat and
burn” which is obviously what the three
R’s stand for.
I have to be honest and say that The Hell have
not come up with the best set of songs that you
are ever going to hear but I will say that this
is an fun side project and after spending many
years in Angels And Airwaves playing stadium rock
songs with Tom Delonge and co I am sure The Hell
is the kind of project that Atom Willard has been
crying out for, for some time and it is clear
to see that Atom Willard and Matt Skiba work well
as a team and the only downside from the ‘Sauve
Les Requins’ EP is that it’s over
before you know it and it leaves you wanting much
more.
