From what I can gather, Cold are a band that have
a rather large following and high profile shows
in the States selling 2 million albums over there
in fact, but over here in international territory,
over their 15 year career. Their older material
was a really thick grungy style of music but then
starting with 2005’s “A Different
Kind of Pain” the band began receiving less
than praising reviews regarding the complete disregard
for their heavier roots. That saw the band take
an extended hiatus till 6 years later where they’ve
returned with “Superfiction”, perhaps
the saviour of a once great sound or a desperate
attempt a global fame?
What’s present on this record is a bit of
both of those analogies; you can feel the early
influence but also there are less than subtle
differences from past material. Considering the
usual negative connotations of a band taking a
more commercial step in their career this seems
to have its benefits from what I’m hearing.
Now I will say that their album “Year of
the Spider” which preceded this album and
the one before is much more impressive and far
superior to this, but “Superfiction”
is still a great effort.
Lead single “Wicked World” offers
fans a retro Cold style they’ve grown to
love whilst with this new extended range in writing
somehow adding a layer of flowing tones and matured
finishing. Not the best track they’ve written
bit it’s pretty tasty to say the least,
the first part of the album in fact is filled
with incredible melodies and catchy choruses.
The second half however takes a bit of a hit as
it’s much less distinctive and powerful
as the first part, it contains songs like “Delivering
the Saint”, “Flight of the Superstars”
and “The Park” which are just lacking
compared to the impact the albums openers had.
So to sum up I’m not saying the album is
rubbish far from it, I’m saying that when
there has already been awesome it’s always
going to be hard to live up to what they’ve
done up to now. It’s a good album I enjoyed
listening to it but it’s always going to
be a lesser version of past works, sorry lads
hopefully if you stick around this time you might
get yourselves back on track.
