When Ryan Mellor left Deaf Havana back in May
2010 the band announced that they were going to
carry on as a four piece and continued to play
gigs across the country but as time moved on Deaf
Havana felt the pressure when it came to writing
lyrics and new song’s with James Veck-Gilodi
having extreme pressure on him writing lyrics
for the first time in his life and it even got
to the point where he that Deaf Havana had no
future and that there would be no future material
released but 18months on and Deaf Havana have
just released their new studio album ‘Fools
And Worthless Liars’ and it is safe to say
it is one of the best albums released all year
by a British band.
The album opens with ‘The Past Six Years’
a song which features real true to life and personal
lyrics about the band’s lack of success
in the rock world and the hard work that has been
put in and having to play shows all over the country
and running on empty with lack of sleep and general
tiredness, musically the song is proper stripped
back and see’s Deaf Havana take on an acoustic
approach and it pays off for them as the lyrics
are close to their heart and the whole stripped
back feel it’s with the overall theme and
feel of the song.
‘Youth In Retrospect’ is more like
the rocky Deaf Havana material that we have all
come to love of recent time’s, the riffs
are thick sounding whilst the vocals flow well
especially during the fast paced rocking chorus.
‘I Will Try’ opens with massive group
vocals and is one hell of a beast of a track that
flicks from slow paced to fast paced throughout
and once again the chorus is a complete winner
that will be going around your head for days to
come after the first listen.
As the album progresses it gets stronger and stronger
with songs like ‘Little White Lies’
and ‘Anemophobia’ blasting out at
a million miles per hour and giving off a pure
radio friendly feel which is just shouting out
for people like Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley to play
on heavy rotation.
Overall ‘Fools And Worthless Fools’
is an album that is all killer and no filler and
is easily the best material that Deaf Havana have
ever written and it shows that James and co had
no reason to worry about their future when Ryan
left as they have come back with a much bigger,
serious and accessible sound which is bound to
gather them thousands of fans and cement them
a bright future in the music industry.
