Senser are a great hip-hop-rock-dance band who
has been around since the late 80’s and
they are currently working on their fifth studio
album which is due for release some time in 2012,
but somehow the band have managed to find a bit
of spare time to release a brand new EP titled
‘Biting Rhymes’.
‘Biting Rhymes’ is due for release
on the 27th November and it is a complilation
of early hip hop covers, which is Senser’s
way of paying homage to the artists who inspired
them to become the band they are today, the EP
features covers of Public Enemy ‘Dont Believe
The Hype’, Eric B And Rakim ‘Follow
The Leader’, LL Cool J ‘Mama Said
Knock You Out’, Public Enemy ‘Channel
Zero’ and The Beastie Boys ‘Looking
Down The Barrel Of A Gun’.
The EP opens with the classic Public Enemy track
‘Dont Believe The Hype’ and it sounds
very much like the Public Enemy classic but it
does have that slight Senser electronic twist
running through it and some funky flute parts
as an added extra which is Senser’s way
of making this classic song their own.
The Senser cover of ‘Follow The Leader’
is covered in the style that material from the
debut Senser album sounded like, with big chunky
guitar riffs and massive electronic beats and
scratchy surface sounds.
The bands cover of ‘Mama Said Knock You
Out’ is one hell of a beast of a track,
I remember listening to the original track back
in the day when LL Cool J was all the hype, but
the twist that Senser have put on the track makes
it sound so much better than the orginal, the
vocals are really raw sounding and when Heitham
Al-Sayed shouts out ‘Im gonna knock you
out, mama said knock you out’ you just know
he means business.
The last track on the EP is a cover of the Beastie
Boys ‘Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun’
and it is a live recording of Senser playing the
song back in 1994 and if anyone can come close
to sounding like the Beastie Boys then Senser
can and they prove it here with a good cover.
Overall ‘Biting Rhymes’ is a good
stop gap for Senser and an interesting take on
these hip-hop classics and I am sure it will easily
keep their fans happy until album number 5 is
ready.
