When Steel Panther released ‘Feel The Steel’
back in 2009 they shocked the world with their extremely
sexist lyrics but also gathered a massive following
which has seen 1000’s of people screaming
out their lyrics at their live shows, festival appearances
and also club nights across the world.
Steel Panther have been away from the music scene
for the best part of a year now whilst they have
been working on their third studio album ‘Balls
Out’ which has just been released and it
follows on perfectly from ‘Feel The Steel’
with witty tongue-in-cheek sexual lyrics and more
classic rock hair metal guitar riffs than you
can bust a grove to.
The album opens with a spoken word introduction
‘In The Future’ which is basically
a robotic voice talking about being in the year
6969 and as soon as the intro is done the Panther
smash straight into ‘Supersonic Sex Machine’
which opens with a made flurry of fast guitar
riffs and Michael Starr on top form with his catchy
vocals and borderline offensive sexual vocals.
Moments like ‘Just Like Tiger Woods’
show off how Steel Panther really don’t
give a fuck and don’t have any boundaries
and secondly show off their creative and funny
side by turning a real life celebrity situation
into an hilarious song with Michael Starr singing
“If you wanna be like Tiger Woods, Fertilizing
ladies in the neighbourhood, Get real rich and
you will find, All the hot chicks will want to
grind” and also “If you wanna be like
Tiger Woods, Poking all the holes in the neighbourhood,
Tell your wife how it's gonna be, Your driver
is community property”, and it is moments
like this which make Steel Panther so much fun
as long as you have a good sense of humour.
Songs like ’17 Girls In A Row’, ‘Critter’
and ‘It Won’t Suck Itself’ are
funny but also come close to crossing the line
such as one of the key lyrics in ‘Critter’
which has Starr singing ““Hit her
in the shitter, treat her like a critter”,
‘Tomorrow Night’ is also another well
written song with lyrics that will appeal to the
majority of the world’s population with
Starr singing “I’m going to get some
pussy, tomorrow night, tomorrow night, but tonight
I’m playing Angry Birds like a million other
stupid nerds”, and it is moments like this
which are priceless and show off the how creative
the Panther are.
The stand out track on the album is the album
closer ‘Weenie Ride’ it is a soppy
ballad with a sexual twist about how Michael Starr’s
cock is better than a ride at Disney Land and
if this song does not getting you singing and
laughing along on the first couple of listens
then you really do need to check your pulse as
this is Starr’s song writing at it’s
best, musically the song reminds me slightly of
‘Community Property’ from ‘Feel
The Steel’ but a little bit more toned down.
Lyrically the album is more of what Steel Panther
fans have come to love and expect from the band
whilst instrumentally things are sounding more
crafted and better put together than on ‘Feel
The Steel’ and there are also some oustanding
guitar solos on offer with Satchel showing off
his rock god skills, but in general I will say
that ‘Balls Out’ is defiantly a grower
as on the first couple of listens the album flowed
as one with not much standing out but now certain
songs stand out more than others for various different
reasons.
