“Any Man In America” marks the 6th studio
album release of American alternative rockers Blue
October; the subject matter is based on some of
the most emotional concepts and themes in a modern
day society, the lyrical themes are all based on
the messy divorce and resulting custody battle for
the young daughter of lead vocalist Justin Furstenfield.
Extremely deep and personal issues are nothing new
within the world of alternative rock but when it’s
so fresh and raw will anger take over and affect
the style?
The first full song after the intro track is
“The Feel Again (Stay)” which pulls
at you emotionally in the way of feeling sympathy;
whilst the majority of the bands material has
been pretty emotional with big hits like “Hate
Me”, this song is just the musical embodiment
of emotional pain. The musical style after this
song though is really quite strange because they’ve
started experimenting with odd techniques which
for an alternative rock band don’t really
fit; “The Money Tree” to start with
I really don’t like, it’s got a really
vindictive feel as opposed to the sadness on the
first track, quite frankly the music contains
techniques you’d expect from a hip hop act.
Also I feel some of the songs have lyrics may
be a little bit controversial, the intro to “For
The Love” what appears to be his daughter
crying talking about wanting to stay with her
dad.
By this point in the album I feel that it’s
a more vindictive concept than a way of dealing
with the issues, it just expresses anger towards
his ex-wife. There is a lot of music that contain
bad messages with lyrics but this is just provoking
hostility with regards to breakups, it’s
not best way to look at things and does sort of
reflect badly on the vocalist. I feel I’ve
expressed my thoughts on the release now, it’s
a completely different style to Blue October’s
normal style, the message doesn’t really
tie in with the music and I don’t feel that
it was the best possible way to share anguish
in a musical form. Sorry guys but this hasn’t
made a lasting impression on me.
